WHAT THE FUCK

#privacy

Yeah, sooo maybe think even harder on whether or not you want to use #threads (or ANY #Meta product)

@semioticstandard @cstross Hey, @jtlg , is this Wiretap Act territory?
@SteveBellovin @semioticstandard @cstross I don't think so. The declaration says that Onavo monitored “the applications installed on those users’ mobile devices and the amount of time the users spent on each application.” None of that is "contents” for Wiretap Act purposes.
@semioticstandard @Taffer so, uh, what happened between then and now that had him lamenting how Threads couldn't launch in Europe due to privacy regulations?
@kboyd @semioticstandard I’m assuming bribery, but I have a very low opinion of politicians and corporations…
@Taffer @semioticstandard assuming that gruber got bribed, you mean?

@kboyd @semioticstandard I thought this was about EU data protection giving up on keeping data out of the US, d’oh!

Facebook probably found a cheaper way to spy on everything. But, I think they also gave up on their VPN?

@Taffer @semioticstandard

Linked article: April 2020, anti-facebook

Last week, gruber toot: seemingly pro-facebook by way of lamenting that Threads refused to launch in EU due to privacy regs.

I'm wondering what changed with gruber.

@kboyd @semioticstandard oh, probably bribes then, maybe he’s bought stock

@Taffer @semioticstandard this is the post in question, btw: https://mastodon.social/@gruber/110667962169426329

I've helped to implement GDPR compliance. It's a good protection for users, and it's not that onerous. Proper deletion. Proper exporting. Should be table stakes for any company's software.

His post felt like he was down bad with capitalist brainworms.

@semioticstandard and yet, once 3rd party iOS app stores are a thing (or sideloading) all the regular folks out there will rush to get the latest Facebook apps
@semioticstandard Just a heads up, this article is from 2020.
@semioticstandard one has to wonder what kind of cognitive dissonance prevents @gruber from connecting the dots between Facebook and Threads exactly.
@semioticstandard
What's all this Onavo stuff anyway?
@semioticstandard I'm so glad people are finally remembering all this nightmarish shit!

@semioticstandard

From the piece:

"Facebook’s stated intention for this software was to use it for mass surveillance of its own honest users... Let me repeat what I’ve stated before: Facebook is a criminal enterprise."

Strong agree!

@semioticstandard I think we have already our answer. But, I had since Zuck call user "dumb fucks"
@semioticstandard So they went all the way to Israel to get monitoring software that the US government uses. Twitter is using something Peter Thiel cooked up, no doubt...
