So, I've always been an #Ubuntu fan. However, for work I sometimes need to switch to #Windows for specific applications and also in the past #Linux gaming wasn't well supported, so my #Steam library takes quite a hit when I move to #linux

When I recently switch back from #Windows10 to #Linux, I decided to go with the good ol' #Ubuntu. Because it simply works and it is popular and I have many resources and support to help me. Say what you want, but many of the #Linux kinks and bugs have been worked out of #ubuntu

But damn. I was so fun to be back on an OS that I love, but I actually felt so limited by Ubuntu. I was struggling to figure out whether my GPU drivers are even working and the #SnapStore was unbelievably slow. To the point where I would run speed test and reboot my router, just to realized it just takes 2 minutes to load.

It has always been these small things in #Ubuntu that bothers me.

For example in version 18.02 I remember that if I changed the volume or screen brightness the dialogues would move up-down-left-and right by single pixels as I change the value, and this just drove me insane.

Now in the latest version, the thing that drove me crazy is the origination of the application menu. We always brag about customization in #Linux, but in #Ubuntu making folders and moving applications around was just a paint. So much that I actually wanted to get rid of the damned installation.

Which I did! I finally gave in and moved to #System76 #PopOS and now I have #Ubuntu without all of this other bullshit. The "Start Menu" is way more attractive and has native support for folders and tabs! It now looks and feels exactly like I wanted!

Also my GPU now works. I just had to install something extra and bam, now my integrated graphics are used. Videos, #Youtube encoding and decoding is fast and all of my games I can play on #Linux on #Steam are just working perfectly now

#System76 really did good with this #Cosmic update. The new window titling system. I can however see that it still needs work.

It as a predefined behaviour that it wants to exercise on the user so I find my self easily toggling it on and off during times where I know I want it and I know it will just annoy me, but otherwise I am just loving #popos

If I have to make a switch again, I will be to a pure KDE distro, but it would only be for fun and for testing, because I have fallen in love with #popos

#Linux #System76 #Ubuntu #Debian #PopOS #KDE #GNOME #Cosmic

I also just love the applications menu with the super-button.

I know all the apps that I have installed and I know what I want to run. So now I can just search for an application and run it immediately, without even opening the applications menu.

@Stark9837

I have a Windows Machine for my daily driver, but I run Pop on my ThinkPad. Every time I travel and have to use it, I'm always so delighted by it.

@Stark9837 Their new Cosmic DE will be very interesting. I was skeptical at first, but they are doing many things right.

@Stark9837 it came shipped on my new #adderws and I am digging it.

My only beef right now with it is the GPU coming on makes the fan sound like a jet taking off. I'm thinking the ramping is set too agressive

@reprapryn

Only after discovery was the correct thing to install yesterday. My GPU started working correctly. My fans do turn on, but more my CPU fan than my GPU fan, and I am running on a gaming laptop. They are definitely not hitting the 6000RPM max, and I still see them as quite silent.

However, I see #Dwarffortress as more CPU intensive than GPU intensive.

#Linux #PopOS #System76

@Stark9837 Terra Invicta for me. Doing a Humanity First run.

now that I think about it may be CPU triggering on doing it. That game is absolutely brutal on a CPU with how much sim it's doing.

@Stark9837 Cosmic was super buggy the last time I tried it but had some promise. Maybe I need to give it another look.

@amd

I started hearing about it from the #LinuxExprriment on #Youtube but didn't immediately make the switch. Only tried #PopOS about a week after installing #Ubuntu.

Currently I am loving my experience with it and played around a lot with the new windowing system last night . I really enjoyed it once I understood how it worked.
