This law is horrifying. It doesn't just affect people under 18, although that’s bad enough. All "sexually oriented" material is now banned from libraries, for all persons. This covers any book that contains "representations or descriptions" of sexual intercourse, homosexuality, lesbianism, and even buttocks or breasts. If your book describes a breast or a bum, it's banned from libraries in Mississippi.

How many people noticed that Mississippi is attempting to make it impossible for minors to borrow *any* eBooks via library systems? https://bookriot.com/hoopla-overdrive-libby-now-banned-for-those-under-18-in-mississippi/

This law will never stand up under the first amendment, but it’s a measure of what the fascists want to achieve, and in the meantime it’ll cause enormous disruption.
@bodhipaksa will it never stand though? "don't say gay" stood pretty well so far in federal courts.
the first amendment, as all rights in the united states, only consistently applies to rich white people.

@Yuvalne @bodhipaksa

Totally true. But if "vendors" is being used the same way it was when I worked in print publishing (and I admit it might not be)...

...this time they're picking a fight with *very* rich white people. Like Amazon.

@bodhipaksa The fascists may underestimate librarians, that's for sure.
@bodhipaksa @amaditalks presumably underage teens from rival families who commit suicide - will still be just fine though, because "culture" 😉
@maskedname @amaditalks @bodhipaksa I mean, it's still something they make you read in school, I don't think there is an adult alive in a first world country that hasn't read Romeo and Juliet or seen one of the countless adaptions like West Side Story (which is awesome)
@bodhipaksa That’s a huge swath of the romance genre, which is the biggest selling genre in publishing. Waiting for the mainstream publishers to wake up and file a lawsuit.
@bodhipaksa @amaditalks @BlackAzizAnansi To hell with all of them. Race to the bottom.
@bodhipaksa
Gonna be a huge pile of Xanth novels available at library sales in The Magnolia State.
@amaditalks
@bodhipaksa @amaditalks Well, that maybe helps explain the mass mailshot I got from the CEO of Penguin Random House today, announcing (to all past and current PRH authors) that they're taking or joining legal actions (together with the ALA, AAP, Pen, and other groups) in Florida, Texas, and Arkansas to challenge book bans and anti-reader laws. Miss. is a bit ahead of the curve but I expect they'll be on the list soon as well. The publishing industry's finally waking up to the existential threat.
@cstross @amaditalks Oh, that's most interesting. You have to wonder how much these ridiculous laws are supposed to be a performance for the base: "See, we tried to protect our children from smut, but the Deep State Liberal Supreme Court stopped us."

@bodhipaksa @cstross @amaditalks i would feel they are scared that this will directly impact dales and licensing agreements so I would feel they are genuine

But I also hate them for going after the IA , but I guess in this case it's the enemy of my enemy...

@bodhipaksa @cstross @amaditalks I don't even think it goes that far. Signing the law is the win for them, the lawsuit and potential defeat will likely never reach their base or it will be mentioned in passing
@bodhipaksa @amaditalks
So, that's the Bible fucked, then?
@hittitezombie @bodhipaksa @amaditalks no, they’ll just hand-wave an exception for that particular book
@bodhipaksa @amaditalks
Does the Mississippi ban include biology textbooks and medical books? Will college libraries be included so they never get another qualified doctor?
@bodhipaksa @amaditalks that's... Almost every book? Certainly includes the bible.

@bodhipaksa @amaditalks democratic backsliding in full slide.

Not with a bang but a whimper, nej?

@bodhipaksa @amaditalks @cstross

It saddens me that the Americans complaining the loudest about the Taliban are the same ones pushing their own theocratic bullshit over here.

@bodhipaksa @amaditalks Time for Mississippi to ban the bible under current law.
@bodhipaksa @amaditalks That is going to make high school health and/or medical school or even art or literature a bit of a challenge.
@bodhipaksa @amaditalks your description includes the bible lol

@bodhipaksa @amaditalks Then I guess those sexually frustrated white-wing Mississippi housewives can kiss their romance novels goodbye, right?

Or anything involving courtship, dating, or marriage. All are inherently sexual in nature. Even more so than the LGBTQ literature, which is often more about identity.

@farrisswisher @amaditalks @bodhipaksa Fuck mississippi. I'm gonna enjoy me some fun content no matter what.

@bodhipaksa
The article links to and uses the wrong text. It links & copies HB1341, which didn't pass, but is talking about 1315, which did.

The text and status of HB1341 (didn't pass) is here:
https://legiscan.com/MS/text/HB1341/id/2682019
You can see what they copied matches Section 2 (1) etc.

HB1315, which is the one the article names, and which passed, is here:
https://legiscan.com/MS/text/HB1315/id/2767725
In that same section (they're fairly similar), it has the critical change of saying
> [...] may offer digital or online resources or databases to minors only if [...]

Still bad, just a different flavor.

Mississippi HB1341 | 2023 | Regular Session
