Happy 15th Birthday App Store 🎂
@pschiller Can you imagine if iPhone was still just web apps?

@monorailtimes @pschiller Web apps would be a lot more robust for sure! All kinds of web technologies would have been rapidly prioritized.

Kind of like how because the iPhone didn’t support Flash, everybody rushed to replace it on their sites.

I've always wished they would have been treated a little better than they have – and they have developed quite a lot – but much of the first-class-like treatment has come in the last year or two. (I'm still not exactly sure whether to thank luck or Europe.)
@pschiller Wonder how many iPhones needed repairs from people getting angry at Monkey Ball and tossing their phones?

@pschiller Thanks for making me feel OLD.

Surely it was less... Maybe Ten? ;)

*looks at notes*. Oh. It was that long :/

@pschiller feels like yesterday. Time flies when you're having fun?
Apple's App Store changed the software world 17 years ago | AppleInsider

On this day in 2008, the still-new iPhone gained an App Store, destroyed selling software in boxes, made apps cheaper — and is now mired in controversy.

@pschiller Happy Birthday AppStore! 🎂

@pschiller It was a career highlight to see our app banner on day one. I can’t express the excitement we all felt, but it’s still memorable after all these years.

How many hands of poker have you played since then?

@pschiller Time flies… I remember the hype like it was yesterday!
@pschiller HBD! 🥳
I’d love to know what was the first app you download from the App Store?
@gruber @BasicAppleGuy @pschiller If you win you could buy a copy of Texas Hold’em
Texas Hold'em

Texas Hold'em are mobile games that were developed by Apple to adapt the card game of the same name to be played on various iPod, iOS, and iPadOS devices. The first mobile version of Texas Hold'em from Apple Computer was originally released through the iTunes Store on September 12, 2006 for the 5th-generation iPod, 3rd-generation iPod nano, and later Click Wheel-based iPod models. It was discontinued by the end of September 2011 as the iPod classic was the last remaining Click Wheel-based model.

I’ll bet you’re right.
@BasicAppleGuy @chockenberry @gruber @pschiller And did I just redownload Hold ’Em because this brought it to mind? Yes.
@BasicAppleGuy @chockenberry @gruber Ha! My App Store purchase history shows that I downloaded “Texas Hold‘em” on August 20, 2008. My first download on July 10, 2008 was the “iTunes Remote” app (I downloaded a number of apps testing the store before that).
@pschiller ooof. Mine was AIM. But I do see iTunes remote 3 apps higher.
@pschiller @BasicAppleGuy @chockenberry @gruber mine was eBay. My oldest app purchase that is still installed. Followed by the Remote app!
@pschiller @BasicAppleGuy @chockenberry @gruber « Virtual Pool Lite » for me. On the iPod Touch December 2008
@pschiller I’m still getting a lot of use out of the Remote app, on my iPad. It’s a great second screen use when playing music from my iMac.

@gruber @BasicAppleGuy @pschiller Some Stephen Robles is saying Phil made also Threads account: https://www.threads.net/@philipschiller007

Is that so?

@gruber @BasicAppleGuy @pschiller How about invite Phil to The Talk Show to talk about it?

@BasicAppleGuy @pschiller @OmniFocus OmniFocus for iPhone in Sept ‘08 is the oldest on my purchases screen although this version is no longer available
Many of my first purchases aren’t in the store anymore 🙁

@pschiller 🎂

Here’s the first few apps I got on that day. Amazing memories scrolling through this list.

@pschiller Good times ...

On Day One, I had four apps in the App Store: three contracted by Astrology.com (long story), and my own trigonometry visualization aide, Trigger (a version of which was later one of the first apps for Apple Watch).

I had a game in the works but suffered a catastrophe before completion; had I finished it, and had it been accepted in time, I would've had 1% of the App Store to myself!

(Maintaining that status over the years would've been an interesting challenge ...)

What a ride! Thanks to everyone who made it possible.

@pschiller Grandes 15 años 🎂 que nos mejoraron la vida.
@pschiller Oooh, does this mean we’ll get Flappy Bird 2 this year?
@pschiller Oh crap. It’ll be asking for the car keys shortly…
