Hey, welcome @ladybugspicnic !
@dairpo 👋 no idea what I am doing here. Where the heck is everyone?
@ladybugspicnic It's pretty similar in function, but you can follow hashtags (like #OttBike and #Ottawa -- and use those to find people who are here already 😀).
@dairpo @ladybugspicnic following hashtags is the primary way I find new people to follow, it's a headline feature IMO.
@ladybugspicnic This post (which @andrew sends to all new users on the Ottawa.Place) also has some good general purpose fediverse/mastodon tips! https://ottawa.place/@andrew/110538512721418228

@dairpo @ladybugspicnic That post happens to be local-only so you probably can't see it; here's a copy with the "local-only posting" bullet removed, since that's specific to our server:

Hello, and welcome to the server! 👋 I'm one of the admins here; let me know if you need help with anything. Some quick tips, if this is your first time using Mastodon:

‣ There's no algorithm here; start off by following people so your home feed has interesting content. I'd start with 20-30 people; you can always follow more or unfollow later! The Local timeline on the side is people on this server, and the "Federated" timeline is people from other servers, if you're looking for a starting point.
‣ You can search for hashtags about things you're interested in, and use that to find interesting accounts to follow.
‣ If you're interested, write an introduction post and add the #introduction hashtag, so people know a bit about you and what you're interested in.
