@lemontoad what is a cool linguistics thing you wish more people knew?
@Labrodorite oh my god thank you for asking. so. im going to talk about hungarian because that is my expertise. one of my all time favourite things that happened in the hungarian language is words like "mรกlna" (raspberry) and "pรกlca" (~stick). these are slavic loan words. the thing with slavic words is that they have a lot of consonant clusters which did not agree with hungarian phonology, so we put vowels in them to break them up and make them easier to say BUT with these few words (1/2)
@Labrodorite so with these few words the OPPPOSITE happened!! the origial slavic words that we borrowed were "malina" and "palica" respectively, and we dropped the middle "i" and lengthened the first "a" into an "รก", and CREATED a consonant cluster which just FASCINATES me, i LOVE how languages happen. (2/2)
@lemontoad this is so neat! I knew nothing about Hungarian and now I know a thing, thanks to you. It's fascinating how words mutate as they migrate between languages, and how that ends up tangling up the rules from both the borrower and the borowee

@lemontoad wat kinda linguistics?

This one is the smartest bloke I know if we're talking about pronunciation: https://www.youtube.com/@DrGeoffLindsey

But then you've got your grammar, semantics, glyphs, etymology. I figure most folk specialize somewhereplace.

@happmacdonald i'd say i'm most interested in etymology and how languages evolved from their early stages, but honestly ANYTHING related to linguistics fascinates me, i love it all so much! thank you for the youtube recommendation, i will definitely check it out!!

(i also really like learning languages but i only actually speak two hehe... hopefully that number will grow!!)

@lemontoad You sound based and people-pilled. The kind of awesome peeps we need on here. Added and boosted.
@lemontoad
Welcome. I know about sewing and mending, linguistics not so much BUT my eldest just finished her MA in Psycholinguistics. PHD or work, not sure what is next ๐Ÿ˜
@lemontoad hey - Iโ€™m a cis lesbian who also loves fiber arts and linguistics, so - hi! What part of linguistics are you into right now?

@lemontoad Welcome to you! I hope you've been enjoying your time around the fediverse so far!

I feel that this is a trap, but...

Tell me about linguistics! I presume that languages are something that you find particularly intriguing? ๐Ÿ˜โ€‹

@lemontoad ask you about linguistics
@fluorine okay this technically isnt a linguistics thing and more an animal fact but it is about speech so i will tell anyway. you know there are some parrot species that can imitate human speech but it still sounds like a bird imitating speech. WELL. did you know that ravens can also imitate speech (and other sounds of course) and they sound EERILY human. its super cool. short video showing a raven speak -> https://youtu.be/AfsnHVaScjg (or look up "raven speaking" if you dont want to click the link)
Ravens can talk!

@lemontoad i wonder how hard it would be for a human to imitate human speech
