Cognitive dissonance is two headlines days apart:
Today was the warmest day on earth in 125,000 years.
Today was the day with the most planes in the air at one time ever in history.

@bethsawin thinking: money can help secure space for consciousness but it is a medium not the object
related: what if people living precariously without shelter were rewarded and offered health, education and security as low consumption heroes?
@bethsawin this does not in any way address the systemic implications of or solutions to that problem, but some happy news from this week that at least is a move in the right direction: the Dutch government won a court case that’ll now allow them to reduce the number of flights at Schiphol Airport.

Finally! I protested for this very thing 30 years ago. Nice to finally be heard.
This from the article has me laughing:
"We [KLM] zijn ervan overtuigd dat we met onze maatregelen minder geluid en CO2 kunnen realiseren mét behoud van het netwerk." De luchtvaartmaatschappij wil dat bereiken met schonere en stillere vliegtuigen, niet door minder te vliegen.”
Uhuh sure KLM, and when exactly are those zero emission planes coming? 🤣
@bethsawin It's like we all (at least, those who appreciate science) want to help address Climate Change, but many fewer make changes that can help. I'm guilty too!

Unscientific but overwhelmingly obvious in every local car park:
Today is the day with the record weight of gas-fuelled vehicles on the road.
I frequently can't see to get out of parking spots because I'm surrounded by trucks with door handles as high as my car's roof.
The US & Canadian auto industries have been too closely integrated, including their massive PR campaigns, for their customers to think differently.
The rise of private planes as there is little regulation. Can take off and land any time day or night. Doesn't have the same emissions standards so the cheapest dirtest fuel is used. Lower maintenance requirements. And lower training standards for pilots.
Private airports are at or near capacity.
- Today was the warmest day on earth in 125,000 years.
- Today was the day with the most planes in the air at one time ever in history.
?? and we're building a HUGE airport in Lisbon to receive 50 million people/year?
In Athens, it is out of control...

the 125000 years are very impressive. Is there a source for that?
