Cognitive dissonance is two headlines days apart:

Today was the warmest day on earth in 125,000 years.

Today was the day with the most planes in the air at one time ever in history.

We need the spaces of quiet and depth where people can take in the implications.

@bethsawin thinking: money can help secure space for consciousness but it is a medium not the object

related: what if people living precariously without shelter were rewarded and offered health, education and security as low consumption heroes?

@bethsawin I suspect that people don’t want to see. Increased noise and speed of life drowns out dissonance.
@bethsawin Berardi wrote something in similar fashion (about the internet), information(s) can be accelerated, (their) meaning on the other hand takes time

@bethsawin this does not in any way address the systemic implications of or solutions to that problem, but some happy news from this week that at least is a move in the right direction: the Dutch government won a court case that’ll now allow them to reduce the number of flights at Schiphol Airport.

Krimp Schiphol mag toch doorgaan, oordeelt gerechtshof

Eerder oordeelde de rechter dat het kabinet niet de juiste stappen had doorlopen.

@Brendanjones @bethsawin

Finally! I protested for this very thing 30 years ago. Nice to finally be heard.

@mcv @bethsawin quite frustrating that the reason is noise reduction and not, y’know, drastically reducing emissions so that we don’t make an unliveable Earth. Happy for the residents nonetheless, of course.

@mcv @bethsawin

This from the article has me laughing:
"We [KLM] zijn ervan overtuigd dat we met onze maatregelen minder geluid en CO2 kunnen realiseren mét behoud van het netwerk." De luchtvaartmaatschappij wil dat bereiken met schonere en stillere vliegtuigen, niet door minder te vliegen.”

Uhuh sure KLM, and when exactly are those zero emission planes coming? 🤣

@bethsawin It's like we all (at least, those who appreciate science) want to help address Climate Change, but many fewer make changes that can help. I'm guilty too!

@Shivadam @bethsawin as a vegetarian cyclist who never had kids, i agree with you..
but charts like this are WILD.
@rustoleumlove @bethsawin Yes, that's it. Thank you for not having children, as I did not either. I could see, a long time ago, where things were headed.

@bethsawin

Unscientific but overwhelmingly obvious in every local car park:
Today is the day with the record weight of gas-fuelled vehicles on the road.

I frequently can't see to get out of parking spots because I'm surrounded by trucks with door handles as high as my car's roof.

@EricLawton @bethsawin I used to think that was an American thing, but the infection has spread :(

@silasmariner

The US & Canadian auto industries have been too closely integrated, including their massive PR campaigns, for their customers to think differently.

@bethsawin

@bethsawin

The rise of private planes as there is little regulation. Can take off and land any time day or night. Doesn't have the same emissions standards so the cheapest dirtest fuel is used. Lower maintenance requirements. And lower training standards for pilots.
Private airports are at or near capacity.

@bethsawin
I juxtaposed two screenshots of tweets with the same news items on the bad old site yesterday.
@bethsawin So many of us take this 100% for granted, family spreads out from coast to coast, fly every holiday.
It's a long weekend, fly somewhere. School holiday, let's fly the kids across the ocean, again.
Ohh look there's a concert or a sports game 1000km away, why not? We can fly, and be back home for bed?
Our species has so little self awareness of how our actions, our choices, always have consequences.

?? and we're building a HUGE airport in Lisbon to receive 50 million people/year?

@bethsawin Building more airports or expanding the ones we have seems, uh....problematic.

Not to use the word ignorant....

@bethsawin When I was born there was a direct train from Nuremberg to the southernmost city of continental Greece. Nowadays you can't even reach Prague.
@bethsawin Gute Nacht, hoffentlich habt ihr auch ein angenehmes Plätzchen, nicht zu heiß 🥱

@bethsawin

the 125000 years are very impressive. Is there a source for that?
