Reminder about what happens when you take national security documents that don’t belong to you.
Reality Winner took a single document.
@Tbsa Here's hoping tRump gets at least 4 years for each document he stole. Hey, is there any rule that says you can't run for president if you're in jail? Or is it just that you can't vote if you're in jail?
@Artemis13Athena @Tbsa you can run from jail. A socialist candidate ran while in jail for advocating draft dodging during the First World War.
@IanMoore3000 @Tbsa Interesting that one can run for president while in jail but if you have a felony conviction you can't vote in many places, even if you served your time. Shades of Jean val Jean!
@Artemis13Athena in Ireland we've gone in the opposite direction - there are no restrictions on former convicts voting, and people may now vote while they are actually in jail.
@IanMoore3000 I think this is the right way. Just because someone committed a crime , that's no reason to remove their right to be represented by the legislator of their choice. I mean, it's not like a politician will rig the system to make it easier on the incarcerated just to get a few votes.
@Artemis13Athena I agree. Everyone should be able to vote. The punishment for committing a crime is being put in jail, not being stripped of the franchise
@Artemis13Athena the prisoner voting thing came in here I think on foot of European Court of Human Rights judgement and wasn't particularly controversial. It was a bit more so in the UK, but they love culture wars there.
@Tbsa I was going to merely say that, as excessive as her sentence was, it does not compare with Trump because she leaked, he didn't. However, I did uncover this bizarre Trump connection:

On August 24, 2018, President Donald Trump tweeted, "Ex-NSA contractor to spend 63 months in jail over 'classified' information. Gee, this is 'small potatoes' compared to what Hillary Clinton did! So unfair Jeff, Double Standard." Winner expressed appreciation for Trump's support, saying, "I can't thank him enough."

[Jeff (Attorney General Jeff Sessions)]
@sqgl Yeah he didn’t leak, he SOLD our nations most high secrets.
@Tbsa sauce for the goose, sauce for the gander, I say. Also, Bolsonaro comparisons apply.
@Tbsa yeah, but (despite her name) she wasn’t “famous”
@Tbsa that’s Trump doing eternity squared then….

@Tbsa I don't think it's fair to compare the president to a random person in any of the departments of the government.

The president is literally surrounded daily by and interacts with thousands of sensitive documents. It's a level of constant exposure that I think makes it nearly impossible to be 100% perfect at keeping them all where they should be.

Given that I don't think the process of asking for documents erroneously taken away is bad; but trump ignored those requests. That's the problem

@Landrin201 trump purposely took documents and then refused to return them after repeated attempts to retrieve them. He has zero right to them. Ifgaf who you are, if you take documents and seek to damage the country. You should be subject to the full extent of the law.
Reality Winner was a whistleblower, glaring example of two tiered system.

@Tbsa yeah I agree he has no right to them.

But I thi k there is a fundamental difference between a president and some random that should afford them a bit more procedural options for returning documents they may have ended up with.

The minute trump refused to cooperate and made it clear he took the documents deliberately, and not accidentally, he was well beyond where he should be given leniency.

@Landrin201 When you are asked to return them, and fail to do so, that is the moment you cross the rubicon. Trump is wholly untrustworthy. He was a known sexual predator before he ever spent one day in office. It never ceases to amaze me how low the bar is for white cis males.
