This makes me sick. The religious right is doing everything it can to deprive children and adolescents the opportunity to learn and think. They need to be able to indoctrinate more young people into their Christofascist army and they can’t do that if they have the freedom to read https://bookriot.com/hoopla-overdrive-libby-now-banned-for-those-under-18-in-mississippi/
Hoopla, Overdrive/Libby Now Banned for Those Under 18 in Mississippi

Public libraries in Mississippi have cut off access to digital platforms like Overdrive and Hoopla to those under 18.

A teacher was removed after sharing this QR code for students to get banned books.

As mass hysteria continues to target American students’ access to information in books, there’s some particularly disheartening news coming out of Oklahoma this week. Wendy Suares, an a…

@DrPsyBuffy This is why other library systems in blue states are allowing young people to sign up as their patrons, which allows them to borrow books electronically. Being in other states they don’t fall under Mississippi jurisdiction.

As sick as this situation is - and it is very sick and disgusting - there is something beautiful in this effort against it, the work of people outside of this to reach in and provide what those inside can’t.

Books Unbanned | Brooklyn Public Library

In April 2022, Brooklyn Public Library joined those fighting for the rights of teens nationwide to read what they like, discover themselves, and form their own opinions. Inspired by the American Library Association's Freedom to Read Statement, Books Unbanned is a response to an increasingly coordinated and effective effort to remove books from library shelves.

@rjfaas Oh yes, those programs are so great! I worry for when Moms 4 Liberty find a way to make it so if you’re under 18 you can’t even use the internet. You know it’s on their list.
@DrPsyBuffy @rjfaas Nothing like a good, decent, fulfilling, medieval Christian education.
@DrPsyBuffy this is beyond awful. The age of consent is 16?? But they can't have books that violate their "obscenity" laws. And so much for parental freedoms. What country is this again?
@christinegrothe In some states they can marry at like 14. The religious right is SICK
@DrPsyBuffy sigh. There is so much...so much that is going so far to the right.
@DrPsyBuffy WTF is happening to this country. My kids are adults and I’m not sure I’ll ever have grandkids, but that doesn’t make me any less concerned for everyone else who has to put up with this stupidity.
@DrPsyBuffy Wisconsin keeps trying to become Wississippi, and Mississippi keeps moving the bar!
@DrPsyBuffy can they do this? What are they going to do to those who break the law? Prison time for reading. Welcome to America.

@DrPsyBuffy Mississippi — where if you test above grade level in reading, they send you home to think about what you’ve done.

What an absolute shitshow these people are.
