There was a period a month or two at the start of the #COVID #Pandemic where it really seemed like we were all pulling together; looking out for one another.

People banging pots and pans at night to honour doctors and nurses.

Random acts of kindness for the retail workers keeping us fed.

Messages like this started popping up on sidewalks, windows, and painted rocks planted in gardens.

A too-brief glimpse of what “community” could mean.

Things really took a turn, didn’t they?

Also: kudos to this neighbour for really going for it.

And for their *excellent* penmanship.

@mick It's our responsibility to keep it going! We can't let that spirit die
@mick *adjusts tinfoil hat* The people "in charge" don't like community. Gets real uncomfortably close to overthrowing some things. So, fake divisions must be created. I truly think we WERE in this together and some very rich weirdos were like "can't have that, they'll literally behead us!"
@la_panique @mick i mean they could join us but apparently that's not enough for them

@mick Those who do not want that world were always going to fight back... this *motions to the everywhere* is them fighting back...

Also pretty pic

@mick and it took a turn to the worst !

@mick What I remember was reading an article in late 2019 about a strange disease that had engulfed a hospital in China. When I mentioned this online, I was told that "People die from the flu all the time, so it's not a big deal."

Of course, that was just a random conversation I had. I was certain the authorities would do something about it.

No, absolutely nothing was done to prevent the spread of COVID. Then the panic started...

@mick it was a good opportunity for a leader to unite us a little bit more. Unfortunately we didn’t have one, eh?
@mick seems like a lifetime far away... Somehow I missed the point where it tipped from "let's keep each other safe" to "fuck the vulnerable".
@mick banging posts and pans is not an adequate replacement for paying doctors properly (in some countries) and offering them psychological help for the trauma they endured during the pandemic
@mick i remember that time & the rather sharp turn to "actually let's be assholes instead". Interesting to see other people noticing it

@mick sadly, yes, they did.

I'm not an RN or doctor, but I work in healthcare, and during the start of the pandemic, I and my coworkers actually felt truly appreciated by the general public for the first time ever, as we worked short staffed and under strange circumstances. I work in an assisted living facility, and so it's different than in a hospital, but we still felt the strain to a great degree.

Overall, people were banding together in support during a weird time.

Now? It's all changed.

@mick it quickly devolved into “you do you”
@mick It's almost as if people, when left to their own devices, will pull together in solidarity, and that it takes an active effort of conspiracy theories, political demagoguery and algorithmic bubble-segregation to subvert our natural inclination to be good to each other.
@mick Waay less airplane traffic made the skies cleaner and brighter... Less traffic combusting fuel... It was a good start, for a second there.
