Here is my NON-Scientific results of #Threads vs #mastondon reach.

My Mastodon account has 630+ Followers, my Threads one has 520+.

Asked both sets to Boost/Repost/Like/Favourite and comment.

Almost ZERO engagement/reach on Threads and massive reach on Mastodon.

I suspected Mastodon would easily win but not by this much.

Doing a test here to see how much reach this #mastodon account with 550 followers has compared to the same test on #Threads with a 430 Follower count. I suspect I already know the answer. If you see this please Boost and Like, and if you want to leave a comment feel free to that. FINAL UPDATE - 4 Days Later Mastodon Likes: 3,200+ Boosts: 2,600+ Replies: 150+ Followers gained: 225 Threads Likes: 17 Retweet/Boosts: Unknown. No stats Replies: 4 Followers Gained: 330

Let's gooo we won!!!11one

@darkufo (BTW you may want to add alt text to the images, something like:

1.3K boosts, 1.7K likes on Mastodon

(for the first) and

3 replies, 12 likes on Threads

(for the second))

@oblomov Damn I thought I had done that. Let me fix that.
@darkufo Well, that's pretty clear!
@darkufo Yeah, I mean, I was totally overwhelmed with the amount of engagement I got with my one-week old account after asking for a simple book recommendation. I expected around 2-5 replies tops, but got way more. Anecdotally, people seem a lot more friendly here (Disclaimer: I don't have Threads installed, nor do I intend to).

@darkufo
Wow, that's big difference

Non-algorithmic system to the win!

@darkufo interesting... I wonder why the huge disparity in engagement numbers.

Threads has FAR more users than Mastodon. I was actually kind of disgusted to hear that on its first day or two it had 30 million users vs. Masto's 13ish? million.

I chalk it up to the community. All the good people that made a conscious choice to move to this platform and support one another. 🥰

@Judeau @darkufo This makes sense to me. Larger numbers don't mean better engagement. There's a lot more crap to sift through and the use of algorithms shows people what Threads thinks they want to see or what is better for their bottom line.

On Mastodon it's just a bunch of people connecting who want to connect with other people. I saw this post come into my feed and I boosted it because I was curious. Anecdotally I get better engagement here with 500+ followers than I did on Twitter with over 3000. I think it's mindset. IMO people here want conversation, not just content.

@BatsInLavender @darkufo I totally agree! Bigger numbers don't necessarily equate to more engagement.

I'm here not just for the content, but also to connect with and support other like-minded individuals.

@Judeau @darkufo Right? I've met so many interesting people here across so many disciplines and interests. I didn't really know how to take Mastodon when we started our instance, but I've fallen in love with the community, not just on our server but across the whole spectrum.
@darkufo not surprised... Here people work with interactions, over there people compete for attention, the algorithm didn't consider that you're post is worthy at all, not even to show it at least once to each and every of your followers there... Organic reach beats algorithmic reach all the time..
@darkufo Yay us! I'm also wondering how many of the Threaders are bots and trolls staking claims on the new territory (tho maybe not likely among those who saw the "contest" you posted?).

@darkufo
I'm zero surprised

Corporate owned social media is for broadcasting and amplifying brands and celebs, everyone has been trained to be stingy with dispensing faves and boosts, and to save them for the deserving (i.e. brands and celebs and influencers)

and anyway you can't be seen liking something *unpopular* you're supposed to like what the cool kids like and boost what the cool kids boost
@purplepadma

@darkufo You mean giving everyone an equal chance of being seen/heard actually allows people to be seen/heard?
@darkufo @rolle All of my followers on Threads are from my existing social graph. I don’t expect any change in engagement.
@darkufo A update would be great on this post ;-)
@darkufo I have no desire to go back under a corporate thumb. I love mastadon and I'm here for the long haul ❤️
@darkufo yeah, I'm definitely not even considering Threads. #mastondonForLife

@darkufo

Threads is like a dead shopping mall with a ton "Coming Soon!" storefront. Mastodon is like a bustling... ahem... town square. Twitter is like going to a bad neighborhood and I might get jumped by transphobes at any given moment.

@darkufo Tbh though I don't think it would have had this much reach if it weren't for people wanting to stick it to Zuck
@Strasbourgdispatch Ha, that's very true as well.
