Heads-up to chaos.social users: This week, Meta (Facebook/Instagram) are releasing their new app, Threads, which reportedly will be Fediverse-compatible.

There are a lot calls to block (or not block) them. We are both too busy this week to make a truly considered decision – sorry for that. Please give us a couple of days: We will sit down and make a call during or just after the weekend.

We'll post here once we've made a decision.

If you want to block them yourself, you can do so once they go live by selecting "Block <domain>" in the context menu of one of their posts or accounts.

If you want to block them ahead of time, you can do so via the CSV import. On https://chaos.social/settings/import, select "Domain blocking list" and upload a file containing "threads.net", (and to be safe, "threads.instagram.net").

Thank you for your patience. After observing the first 24 hours of Threads, we decided to block threads.net (in advance of them at some point joining the Fediverse).

There are openly, aggressively transphobic accounts on Threads.net with no visible attempt at moderation. We would defederate from any other Fediverse instance with that behaviour and no moderation, and there is no reason to treat threads.net any different.

@Silicium I do want that hive of scum and villainy excluded from the Fediverse, especially as Meta is obviously trying to EEE ActivityPub. If you want your bath in that environment, feel free to go there, but please refrain from even attempting to force that on all the others here.

@wonka @ordnung ich kenne die Probleme mir Meta, wenn die berechtigte Sorge besteht, dann muss halt eine selektive synchronisationsfunktionalität implementiert werden, wo user per post festlegen können ob sie am gewisse instanzen gehen dürfen oder eben nicht.

@Silicium @wonka @ordnung Hab mir Instagram lange angetan: Es ist voll von Spam, Betrug, Impersonisation, Hassrede! Oft erfolglos gemeldet, denn Facebook tut absichtlich nichts dagegen. So entstanden NetzDG und DSA, selbst das befolgen sie nur zum Schein. Sie wurden nun erneut mehrfach von Behörden aufgefordert, nichts geschah.

Facebook ist ein Konzern, der Gesetze, Privatsphäre und Menschenrechte verachtet und – ganz dreist – gezielt drumherum arbeitet. Denen schuldet kein Mensch irgendwas!

@elosha @wonka @ordnung das ist alles richtig, ich bin selber auch in keinem anderen Netzwerk mehr als hier. Dennoch bin ich der Meinung das digitale Abschottung nicht die Lösung sein darf, denn wer nicht hinschauen kann, kann die Missstände nicht benennen und wer das nicht kann lässt dem Extremismus unbeantwortet freien lauf.

@Silicium @ordnung @wonka Wir schotten uns nicht ab, wir sperren 1 Schmutzfink aus. Das freie Netz dagegen wird gefördert.

Es ist zu spät, um in Twitter- oder Facebook-Netzen noch das Ruder herumzureißen: Es ist von den Eigentümern nicht gewollt, im Gegenteil. Gegen Trollfabriken kommen wir ebenfalls nicht an.

Wer sich bei FB dagegen lehnen möchte, kann das weiterhin versuchen. Aber wir sollten uns hier nicht alles flooden lassen.

@elosha @ordnung @wonka das ist ein legitimes Bedürfnis, nur wird es dazu führen das die Kontrolle da drüben noch schlechter wird und letztendlich wird die trollfabrik unbeantwortet Einfluss auf die Bevölkerung und damit auf die Politik nehmen.
Ist unsere Demokratie in Gefahr? Momentan ist sie es nicht, ab dem Moment ab dem die Bevölkerung resigniert und dem Diskurs - so abartig er auch sein mag - den Rücken kehrt, ab diesem Moment stirbt die Demokratie.

@joergi Browsers are not the example you think it is. All relevant browsers are Chromium based now, except Firefox.

@joergi @wonka @Silicium @ordnung we can argue about that. KDE KHTML got forked into Webkit and later Blink.... So the community there is quite extinguished, even if you can contribute to the forks, IMHO, the engines are in the end controlled by Apple/Google. (Disclaimer: never contributed in processes there)

@[email protected] @wonka @ordnung my very first blocked account on mastodon, I have no time for people that think bigotry (transphobia) is acceptable on any platform. Racism would not be tolerated so why should this form of bigotry?
For the record I hate the word transphobia, it’s not a fear, it’s bigotry. You don’t call racism “racephobia”.
