I'm considering using student portfolios in my Algebra 2 class next year. Has anyone done this? Any advice?

@eschy12 I dabbled in digital portfolios a few years back and tried Seesaw as a platform. The main lesson I learned was that you need to have a system pretty fully fleshed out before starting, with clear standards for grading, expectations laid out for students, and specific times that you want students to take photos of their work and how you want it tagged. I have not been ready to roll out such a complex system so have not tried it again. But, I'd love to hear of other ways to do it and what you learn about the process! It still seems very cool, if you have the bandwidth.
@eschy12 You might check with @samjshah (or his blog) - I want to say he did some work with portfolios a few years ago.
@druinok @eschy12 I didn’t really … I did some Portfolio stuff in the pandemic but never blogged about it - but it wasn’t about metacognition. but there were a bunch of people who did. I know @jclevelandtran has done it. And I know there were bunches of others but I am repressing them now. Maybe @ablinstein ?

@eschy12 @samjshah @druinok @ablinstein I have a blog post about how I did them when I first started in 2015 (so long ago!) - https://jclevelandtran.com/2015/03/30/sop-portfolios/

Writing an updated post about my more recent versions has been on my To Do list for a while. I should get to that.

@jclevelandtran @eschy12 @samjshah @druinok Please do! This is something I used to do way more in the past - reading over my old blog posts made me realize how much I've forgotten and all the things I used to do 😞 I'd love some fresh ideas and inspiration to dig back in.
@jclevelandtran @eschy12 @samjshah @druinok Ooh found more portfolio resources from @geoffkrall while looking for something else: https://emergentmath.com/2021/05/12/interest-in-a-virtual-math-portfolio-assessment-cohort-for-2021-2022/ Scroll down for a series of blog posts Geoff wrote about creating a portfolio system.

@ablinstein @jclevelandtran @eschy12 @samjshah @druinok I wrote a "how to" article for MTLT's Ear to the Ground journal a few years ago. https://pubs.nctm.org/downloadpdf/journals/mtlt/113/7/article-pe8.pdf?pdfJsInlineViewToken=297432973&inlineView=true

@druinok @eschy12 @jclevelandtran @ablinstein oooh one more thought. I remember Cindy Reagan had a great talk at a conference on writing /journaling in the math classroom and it was awesome. I just googled trying to find something and saw she gave a global math department talk on it… it might dovetail well with your thinking https://www.bigmarker.com/GlobalMathDept/Thinking-About-Your-Thinking-Writing-Math
Thinking About Your Thinking: Writing + Math

Journals, self-evaluations, writing prompts, reflections, and written goals helped improve my students’ critical thinking skills, metacognition, self-awareness, and engagement. I’ll share strategies and examples - and I’d love to discuss how to help you start, or grow, this process in your class.

@samjshah @druinok @eschy12 @jclevelandtran I did blog a bit about incorporating reflections into the classroom http://borschtwithanna.blogspot.com/2017/07/?m=1 Carmel Schettino has researched and written a lot about metacognitive writing https://www.carmelschettino.org/research/metacognitive-journaling/

@eschy12 I don't have any advice but I'm curious to learn more, so I'm following this thread!
