oh FUCK OFF
@mae How to not distribute software, step 1 :)
@mae Dang, if only GitHub had a built-in way to add compiled release versions to a repository
@mae It's a Github repo... there's no excuse, the code is RIGHT THERE
@mae this is the WORST. Also guides that are for some reason discord-only.
@mae github releases is literally *right there*, 🦋
@traumaphoenix @mae no way, is that a new feature?!
@mae I'm not sure, but didnt github have a feature to let users download files?
@mae this is getting out of hand.

@mae

"Yes, this seems stable and sustainable."
- Odysseus

@mae well, they dont have an alternative
github doesnt provide storage for artifacts

/s
…what is even the purpose of locking it down to a discord server?
@Flaky
Same as with BandCamp mailing you a link to download free album I guess — they want you to subscribe/join.
Also managing file hosting might be too complicated to some 😅
With Discord uploading new file is a matter of dragging and dropping file to a chat window and adding a hashtag.
@mae
@m0xEE yes however they could also drag and drop the file onto a github release and add a title
@mae Wow! I didn't know that, TBH I've never had a GitHub account, something made me think that it takes going through the whole build pipeline for something to appear on releases page, but now that I think about it, it doesn't make any sense — and I think they've had the releases feature long before the whole CI/CD thing.
Well, then using Discord makes even less sense — looks like even being a lazy ass doesn't justify it 😁
@Flaky @mae get people to join your discord server
@Flaky @mae "trying to build a community! :)" is the excuse I've always heard, lol
You can do that without locking downloads to a Discord server lol. I’m on FOSS project servers that use both Discord and IRC for people who prefer one or the other.
@blubfeesh
@Flaky @mae Ah yes, the alternative phrase for the "Grow my Discord server and give me internet clout" excuse
@mae @kotaro Either do the job right or don’t bother
@mae reminder (per @glitch):

@winload_exe Was the original post taken down? Can't find it.

@glitch @mae

Glitch (@[email protected]) 💻😺 on Twitter

“Discord is not a wiki. Discord was never meant to be a wiki. Discord as a product is not marketed as a wiki. Discord is not designed to be used as a wiki. Discord is a chat app and clearly has the UI and functionality of one. Stop using it as a wiki.”

Twitter
@winload_exe @mae @glitch who even does this? It’s utterly nonsensical.
@winload_exe @mae @glitch Wait, people actually use it as a wiki‽

@winload_exe @mae @glitch

This has the same vibe as a "database" at work:

User: "I need help with my database. It's slow."
IT: "You have a database?! Why haven't I heard about it before? Who set it up for you?!"
User: "Uh, I just built it!" [proudly points at Excel]
IT: [jaw drops at the 15 sheet, 20 column, 50k row per sheet, formula calculations to death monstrosity]

@abby "Excel"

absolutely the fuck not

@winload_exe And yet absolutely happens on a weekly basis with any accountant.

I once worked somewhere where the accounting General Ledger was stored in Excel on a file server. I left that dumpster fire shortly afterwards.

@winload_exe @mae @glitch
I'd also add: Discord collects rather a lot of user data.
@mae yuck,  Discord really...!
@mae The things I don't understand: Why do FLOSS projects use GitHub and Discord, which are both proprietary.
@mae THEY COULD'VE JUST LINKED THE cdn.discord.com LINK
@mae this is inexcusable, especially since its on github lmfao
@mae At that point, I'd fork the software and distribute it properly myself. Well, if I knew how to program, that is.
@EdanOsborne @mae you can literally fork just to add the release artifact, your fork doesn't need to have changes
