Same as with BandCamp mailing you a link to download free album I guess — they want you to subscribe/join.
Also managing file hosting might be too complicated to some 😅
With Discord uploading new file is a matter of dragging and dropping file to a chat window and adding a hashtag.

@mae Wow! I didn't know that, TBH I've never had a GitHub account, something made me think that it takes going through the whole build pipeline for something to appear on releases page, but now that I think about it, it doesn't make any sense — and I think they've had the releases feature long before the whole CI/CD thing.
Well, then using Discord makes even less sense — looks like even being a lazy ass doesn't justify it 😁
