Facebook's Threads will straight up DOX you.

Mistress Matisse on Twitter

“If you’re a sexworker, think VERY carefully about joining Threads, because here’s what Mark Zuckerberg did to me: I had a FB account as Mistress Matisse, but FB scraped my legal name from somewhere else and then changed my displayed NAME on my account without notice/consent. Yep.”

Twitter
@megaspel I have never tried to make an account for privacy and other personal reaons, but i always thought they make RL names obligatory to even start

@crazy_pony @megaspel folks could have their original display names from before that policy "grandfathered in" (so to speak).

Still for meta to pull this bullshit is hella gross

@megaspel @stavvers Yup. Despite explicitly stating no, my Insta a/c was *not* to load my contacts from anywhere else, I consistently get notifications that 'person I only know from that time at the outbreak of Covid when I urgently had to set up multiple WhatsApp groups for work' is also on Insta. I assume they must be getting similar notifications about me, and my 'anonymous' insta account.
@Tarbh @megaspel Meta will get you connected to people [that you want or need to avoid, with no regards to your efforts to the contrary!]
@megaspel I had my Roller Derby name as my middle name and they removed it. Same thing happened to a lot of other derby girls to the point that I had no idea who I was following after a while. Even with the nickname option, not a lot of gals updated that. But I feel like if you're trying to protect your identity, Facebook creates opportunities for scammers and stalkers to seek you out.
@NerdRage42 A ref friend of mine had his account straight up banned. Half the league we ref'd for had their names forcibly changed. Nobody knew who anyone was anymore.
@robotfactory that platform became incredibly useless to me. Now it's a place I occasionally go to for old pictures or to send a message in messenger if I don't have someone's phone number. IF I can remember their forced name.
@NerdRage42 @robotfactory sounds like my experience with DuckDuckGo and Google for me

@megaspel And if they can't scrape or figure out your real identity they will lock your account until you send them ID.

They are literal garbage.

@zorinlynx @megaspel that's the reason my original fb account is in limbo forever, I am never giving mark zuckerberg my drivers license, the bastard.
@megaspel So, we can trust Facebook to help the Fediverse instead of exploit it for its own disgusting gain, amirite?
... Amirite?
@megaspel totally off topic but jesus christ THANK YOU for actually linking the original post
@megaspel Facebook's new social media service is a dangerous nightmare that anybody who wants to protect their identity or personal details should stay well clear of. To be fair that is every single meta product, Zuckerberg is the king of selling private data & putting people & countries at risk.

@megaspel

This is horrifying..

Jamie

@megaspel

The
real lesson being don't use any products owned by Meta, let alone sign up for new ones.

They really did that? What were they thinking?

It sounds like the kind of thing that should be illegal to do without the consent of the user, but it also sounds like something no legislator ever really considered.

@megaspel Not surprised. Facebook was completely cavalier with privacy in the early days, changing settings with zero notice in favor of exposing data. Previous experience with this is why I don’t trust Meta with anything at all.
@megaspel She may well be the person I miss most from the bird site. Le sigh.

@megaspel I... wanna throw some hands.
I know of her. She's a great educator in the spaces she's in. But nobody in her IRL life or other life need to know about eachother and vice versa.

Facebook/Threads using their algorithm to out communities on the edges of society. Not a good look. In fact... it makes you a Monster. 🙃
Cool to know we cant trust a social media site to keep us secret from people we DONT want to be found by. Which in her case, could include stalkers.

What I gathered is she’s going to stay on Twitter - won’t move anywhere. Not even the Fediverse. The work they’ve put up in building a clout (of followers) is too precious for these people to move on to another platform.
@megaspel i wonder if they can start doing this to accounts on federated servers - like, not actually reach in and change your account, but have a different name displayed to Threads users that facebook has deemed to be your legal name
@megaspel thank god that Phillip Shoebuckle sounds realistic enough for the Zucc

@megaspel

This is heart breaking. I've been doxxed before too. Obviously the monopoly social media doesn't care about your privacy.

I also really hate how forcing people to use an official names stifles us in safely expressing our private and intimate lives in a public space. They don't want that kind of expression there. Yet it's part of being human.

I'm staying the hell away from Meta and Threads. I just don't care how big it gets.

@megaspel I had friend requests on threads waiting for me before I joined and made an account. Weirdos

@megaspel Thus #FediPact is a literal act of #SelfDefense and #MutualDefense!

Make shure your instance signed it!
