#Introduction #Introductions

Hi,
Another account of @PaulaToThePeople.

This is all about #Fairphone.

The story:
Do you remember back in the days when #Apple installed the suicide nets in "their" factories?
That's when I decided I'll no longer buy any Apple products.
When my iPhone died I looked around for a more sustainable and/or free (as in freedom) option.
So I stumbled upon Fairphone and bought the #FP1 or rather the #FP1u.
Soon afterwards I joined the first Fairphone meeting that took place in Vienna, Austria and we founded the @AustrianFairphoners.
So I joined the Fairphone community on Dec 9, '14 and it was like a family for me for a long time.
In 2018 I was actually introduced to the #Fediverse via the Fairphone forum.

In 2019 I joined #FridaysForFuture and ever since, I'm less active with Fairphone, but I would still never buy another phone and if I get the chance to help setup a Fediverse instance for Fairphone of course I will take it. 🙂

Who else owns a Fairphone here? I'd love to read your Fairphone origin stories. 😉

@paula @PaulaToThePeople @AustrianFairphoners Had (well, still have) an FP1 - not the first run though - and was very happy with it. Unfortunately the system "expired", in that mission-critical apps (e.g. bank) could no longer run on it & no update was in sight at the time. I couldn't afford the next generation of Fairphone, so haven't come back. Yet. 😊

(1/X) From 2014 to 2016 I was on an Apple hype. I had an iPhone, iPad and MacBook.
This was when I started studying computer science and I got really introduced to computing everywhere.

Back then I had an LG Android phone running Android Gingerbread.

I bought a MacBook Pro in January of 2014, this was my first Apple Product.
In Summer, during my first visit to the USA I bought an used iPhone 5S. Had a mixed experience. It broke twice in warrant

@paula @PaulaToThePeople @AustrianFairphoners (2/X)
I don’t know when I got the iPad.
Continuing my study to a computer science degree, my relationship with technology and the way I use computer changed more drastically. I also started to get more interested into right to repair and generally my rights to use a computing devices how I want to use it.

It still was heavily focus on gaming and I think around 2015 it was when I first build my own computer.

@paula @PaulaToThePeople @AustrianFairphoners
(3/x)
2016 I got into University (and was kinda lazy for a very long time. Still my computing changed more and more.
In 2016 is Sold the iPhone to a friend. I wanted to buy a Google Project Ara phone, but those got canceled just before release. So I looked at the Google Pixel phones. To expensive. I choose a OnePlus3 and used it until 2022.

And in I think it could be Xmas 2017 or 2018 I gifted the iPad to my Sister.

@paula @PaulaToThePeople @AustrianFairphoners
(4/x) By 2018 I was definitely a Power-User. I think 2018 was the time I build my second computer.(still have the first in a closet).

But I would say by 2020 I really started to take right to repair and use my device how I want to use it very seriously.
Since then I daily drive Linux on my PC, my MacBook still got updates from Apple so It remained on MacOS until very recently.

@paula @PaulaToThePeople @AustrianFairphoners (5/x) in 2021 I repaired my OnePlus3, the screen was heavily scratched (I never broke a phone screen in my life). And when I was at it I also replaced the battery.
And the trouble started. The phone was not designed to be repaired. Whenever I fixed a thing I broke something else.
I also installed a custom ROM on the phone.
I dealt with the troubles until early 2022 when the ROM started to be troublesome, and the deceive was just awful to use.
@paula @PaulaToThePeople @AustrianFairphoners (6/x) I still held on until end August but by then it was already decided to by a new phone. I also looked at iPhones but to expensive. And I wanted something repairable.
By Brother and Mum both use Shiftphones (also repairable).
Because of futures proofing I decided on a Fairphone 4. I wanted to gift it myself to my birthday, inconveniently my OnePlus 3 final bit the dust in August so I started using the FP4 two weeks before my birthday.
@paula @PaulaToThePeople @AustrianFairphoners (7/x) for me the Fairphone was a Great choice, I have a repairable, hackable and future proof device. I intend to use the device for at least 5 years but aim for 10 years.
If it get no more android updates I install another non Android based Operating System, Fairphone allows you to do that without any restrictions.
My MacBook ist still alive but now running a Fedora 38 a Linux based Operating System. My PC got an hardware upgrade just recently.
@paula @PaulaToThePeople @AustrianFairphoners (8/x) Even things like a keyboard are now bought with repairability in mind. I want to use my devices without restrictions and invasion of my privacy.
My next laptop won’t be a MacBook, eighter I buy from TuxedoComputers, System76 or Framework. If I every buy another laptop, after university there’s little need.
The iPad still lives on.. A new tablet, idk there are so few Linux tables and even less are repairable.
@paula @PaulaToThePeople @AustrianFairphoners (9/9) the tldr is I use a Fairphone because they do not restrict how I can use it and they support right to repair.
@paula
I own a fairphone 3 and am enjoying it quite a lot. It's robust and I put calyxos on it so it's more privacy focussed than the Google loaded base rom.

I've had a Fairphone since 2019, when I bought my FP3.

I mostly bought it because the Nokia smartphone that I'd got from my mobile provider and had expected to be sturdy turned out to have an insoluble fault with its USB-C port and, despite two factory repairs, became unusable within a year.

I'm used to repairing even supposedly unrepairable phones, but the integration of the port onto the mainboard made that impossible.

I already know of and appreciated Fairphone's ethics and openness, but it was the ability to repair that finally pushed me into buying the device outright.

Since then, it's been through a complete dismantling to dry after falling in the bath (it was fine) and is shortly to get a camera upgrade

I also bought two replacement batteries over the years, but sometimes end up fully charging and using a couple over the course of a long day without access to power (it's not recommended due to interfering with intelligence charge management but works fine).

Battery life is very much the weak point of the device (the way I use it, at any rate), but this approach means that it's not any kind of actual problem.

I also love being able to pop the battery for privacy reasons, as it renders remote activation or tracking impossible.

gestures towards recent French government telecommunications and data interception policies

I plan to eventually install /e/ on it, but my kid currently insists that I stick with Android for a couple of Play Store apps.

@paula @PaulaToThePeople @AustrianFairphoners I got mine with @e_mydata pre-installed on it. Easiest way to test my translation of LineageOS 🙂

@paula Wow, that's cool! And exactly how it should be! Communities need to keep an eye out for each other.

@PaulaToThePeople @AustrianFairphoners

My coolest FairPhone moment was when I learned that my sister-in-law, perfectly non-nerdy primary school teacher, had bought one without any influence from me.

She even explained to me her arguments for why she thought it was an important choice and why she was happy with it.

@paula @PaulaToThePeople @AustrianFairphoners i just didn't want a Google-integrated smartphone so I got a FP3 and eventually instalked LinageOS.
Before I had a FP1.

Oh, great to see a #Fairphone instance joining the Fediverse 👋

My journey, huh?
My very first smartphone was a #FirefoxOS (Alcatel OneTouch Fire).
I still have it! It served me well.

Then, Mozilla killed it. I would still be able to use it, but without support, that could be risky in the long run.

So what else could I use?
I didn't want to have an iPhone, Android or Windows Phone, since I don't trust these companies.

Around this time #Fairphone had ads on Twitter. It picked my interest. Especially since it appeared to be an ethical company that values repair & engages in improving the situation for workers in its supply chain

Yes, it's running on Android. But buying a #FP2 was the least of all evils. The one with white translucent back

I could have gone with flashing CyanogenMod (now known as #LineageOS) but there's always a risk of bricking. So I didn't

Somehow I stumbled upon the #FairphoneAngles program in my town and attended a meetup (and subsequently most of them). I wonder whether the Angle is present here on Fediverse. Either now or in the future.

Anyway, I've learned about the forum and noticed a discussion about building a community map to raise awareness.

It appeared to be an back and forth without any progress.
Frustrating!

In my experience as a Front-end developer I noticed that having something in front of you sparks conversation.

So I created https://github.com/WeAreFairphone/community-portal under the WeAreFairphone org (recently discovered it again as I #GiveUpGithub these days).

We made some progress but I think there's a better solution in use now. Anyways, we had progress!

Now, the team behind @Fairphone is putting so much effort in keeping the phones up-to-date as long as possible (thank you 💖) but at some point the Android is not compatible to the hardware put into the devices. So I had to upgrade.

Given my positive relationship with Fairphone - the community as well as the company - I stuck to the brand and bought a #FP3.

It's my daily driver ever since.

Even better: when my wife went through different smartphones by different vendors and managed to get a spider app on each of them, the ability to repair was so convincing that she bought a #FP4 and is using that nowadays.

So we have three Fairphone apps in this household now.

Spreading to more people is not doable right now since Samsung is the only vendor offering assistive support for hard-of-hearing people (next to iPhone).

I have FP4 with Murena and am happy with it. I have been a Linux user for some time and wanted more control over my phone and data. I was also looking for a more sustainable option.

@murena

@paula @PaulaToThePeople @AustrianFairphoners

I'm writing this on my second #fairphone 3+.

I got my first fairphone when I ran out of options with #secondhand phones.

Our household is very much into #reuse. Buying a new phone means a second hand or #refurbished one. I have a phone with a broken screen that I use as a bluetooth gateway for sensors at our house.

Once a phone fell out of my pocket as I was running, and I stepped on it with full force. I had to look for a replacement. I selected a model specifically because it was listed as supported by whatever the alternative operating system of choice was at the time, and by the time I got it, it had been removed as supported, and it really didn't work. I didn't know which information to trust about the older phones, so I decided to do something shocking and buy a new phone. And the only one that seemed reasonably okay was a fairphone. 😀

A year later I accidentally drowned it in a public swimming pool. Fairphones are reasonably repairable, I went to a fairphone specialist in Vienna, but when the main board is corroded from chlorinated water, it's game over. Before I could decide what to do, someone gifted me a new phone, exactly the same one as before. I accepted the gift, and that's the story!

@paula @PaulaToThePeople @AustrianFairphoners I intend to use this phone for as long as possible. It gets updates even though it's not the latest version, I have spare parts (I kept all the intact parts of the first one 😆), there's lots of support from different operating systems (well, right now), and it has a card slot for more memory (in my experience that's crucial to keeping older phones current). I'm trying hard not to drop it anywhere 😁

I'm unhappy with the camera. It's literally the worst phone camera I've ever had. It's a combination of hardware and software aspects, and it's not going to get better. 🤷 All the other features are totally okay for me.

#Fairphone3Plus

@paula @PaulaToThePeople @AustrianFairphoners I incidently bought the Android Version, but installed e/os. I got the support I needed in the respective telegramm channel and looking back I am glad I did the installation. It makes me feel more at home. I hope that I will not need to switch back - for the moment I am just enjoying the situation.
@paula @PaulaToThePeople @AustrianFairphoners Dear Fairphone users, I still use another Phone (Huawei Pro), bought mainly because of camera quality that time. Circling around the Fairphone topic now for years. Main question: How is the camera quality? I want to have the phone as an alternative to my DSL.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experience with me.
@dr_fotograf I have the Fairphone 3 and am happy with the camera, though I'm not really a photographer.
The camera has always been the week-spot of Fairphones, but I don't know about newer models.
@paula Thank you very much for sharing your experience. I am quite sure to put a Fairphone as my next Phone into consideration. Like the concept.
