@jsnell Your knowledge on recent pod seemed like the best I’ve ever heard about nfc / uwb / Bluetooth… here’s what I’ve never figured out:

Why can’t I just walk up to my house door and it unlocks, like my car? With range and direction and low power that should be entirely possible. Taking my phone out of my pocket sucks. (Wife: purse)

@rjj @jsnell Wouldn't you want to be required to authenticate in some way so no one can take your phone to unlock the door?
@Atkinsmatt10 @jsnell works this way today via Express Mode that you can enab;e
@rjj @jsnell With Homekit and Shortcuts you can be promoted to unlock a door if family members arrive home but I’m pretty sure it’ll want authentication before doing so
@rjj the big problem is, it doesn't know where you are -- inside or out. In the car that doesn't matter. In the house, you could leave your phone near the door and it would keep your door unlocked, which is unsafe. So instead smart lock apps wait for you to leave your home area entirely, then send the unlock message when they return and see the lock. Or the locks await the NFC tap which indicates you're at the door.
@jsnell @rjj I’m struggling with a client that wants three auto-unlock doors and is annoyed by the auto-lock. We’ve been through Level, August, Yale, Simplisafe. It requires a prompt to auto-unlock and only one door.
@jsnell @rjj I found a workaround if you have even one smart thing. Arrive home light bulb turns on, when light bulb turns on unlock all doors in HomeKit.
@conorporter @jsnell my August lock was fully auto and no issues on one door. As soon as you go to >1 it’s sketchy.

@jsnell right about direction.

ahh, so cars are using Bluetooth, plus the knowledge that the car is off and doors are locked etc.

Also why the F has UWB been forgotten for 4 years?!

@rjj UWB isn't quite forgotten but it's verrrrry slowly rolling into cars. Apple's CarKey thing uses UWB. It's just super slow integration.
