Politics Home has a story on government plans to re-introduce imperial measures - I think on an optional basis. Perhaps this is compensation to enthusiastic Brexiteers who are disappointed not to have had the bonfire of EU law (and total legal chaos): https://www.politicshome.com/news/article/post-brexit-imperial-measurements-drive-revived
Post-Brexit Push For Imperial Measurements Could Be Revived

Ministers are considering reviving plans to bring back imperial measurements as part of the legislative agenda to be set out in the King's Speech t...

@LornaWoods @davidallengreen Can’t wait to finally be able to buy a pint of beer.
@LornaWoods I could possibly understand this if it would solve a problem but I fail to see what problem it solves.
@JMBragg @LornaWoods
It seeks to solve the problem of the Tories having absolutely nothing substantive or of value to offer to the electorate, apart from this last bit of ‘red meat’ to offer to the gammonati and idiots in general.
@LornaWoods Brexit winning; too pathetic for words.
@LornaWoods @davidallengreen So, stand by for yet another attempt to distract us from what is really going on.
@LornaWoods Bring it on. Anyone whose choice is to package things in Imperial units will be sending a clear signal to the rest of us that they are best avoided.
@LornaWoods what an absolute waste of time.
@LornaWoods
The Tories endorsing Imperial weights and measures is just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.
@LornaWoods Why on Earth would the retail industry go to the bother and expense of recalibrating or replacing weighing equipment and procedures for this nonsense. This will excite a few idiot gammonati, whilst the actual industries it affects will say ‘Nah thanks, we’re fine as we are’.
@markslater The small mercy is that it seems to be optional...
@LornaWoods Would be tragically ironic if it weren’t.
@markslater @LornaWoods there’s a ‘simple’ (probably not) solution to this. Introduce a new weights and measure act and define a pint as 500ml, a pound as 500g, and so on. Sorted!
It’s not uncommon in places in Europe for a loaf of bread (nominally about 500g) to be a ‘one-pounder’ (using Pfund, livre, Pond, etc), so I’m sure the UK could adapt.
(OK, probably not.)
@themomage @LornaWoods Thing is, a pint isn’t 500ml, so for any of this to actually be precise in actual weights and measures (if somewhat woolly in language), would still require all the glasses, bottles, containers, labelling, signage etc to be reviewed and likely replaced at great effort and expense. I think this proposed legislation is simply to allow imperial measures, so the simplest solution is to ignore the idiots and just carry on as you are.
@LornaWoods It‘s also never been a problem in the (rest of the) EU to order beer in pints in the appropriate context, as anyone who‘s been to (for example) one of Berlin‘s Irish pubs can confirm. Equally, I can order "ein Pfund Hackfleisch“ (a pound of mince) at the butchers without any problem - I‘ll just get 500g…
@LornaWoods
Can't wait to see petrol stations displaying £8 per gallon 😬
@LornaWoods Most of them only know about four imperial measures out of dozens that there are. Another chapter from PG Wodehouse featuring Roderick Spode and his good old British knees.
@LornaWoods didn’t they have a consultation on this last year, in which everyone told them it was a bloody stupid idea? I wonder if they think they’ll get a different answer this time?
@LornaWoods Those would be the imperial measures that have never been banned anyway? https://fullfact.org/europe/metric-eu-brexit-pints-metres-pounds/
The EU did not completely outlaw use of imperial measures in the UK - Full Fact

Claims that the EU forced the UK to adopt the metric system and made the use of imperial measures illegal are not entirely true.

Full Fact
@marshalla99 @LornaWoods Yep, so we can now correct them continuously about that, as well as repeatedly correcting the lie that we only got the vaccine so quickly because we'd left the EU.
@LornaWoods
The Brexit booby prize.
@LornaWoods fuck's sake. Some Conservatives seem to have a lemming-like draw to completely worthless ideas.
@DuncanMSussexPol It may also say something about the average age of the demographic they're targeting??
@LornaWoods very true! An attempt to shore up the older vote. Though I must admit I struggle to see there being many people persuadable by this policy who aren't already a lock!
