Today, an essay, on how I felt to discover the Founders were not as had been portrayed, nor much else wholly truthful about American history. Also, how I recovered from that disillusionment, my eyes still on the prize of the promise of America. https://statuskuo.substack.com/p/independence?sd=pf
Independence

Today, a personal essay. When I was little, my Ba would bring out fireworks for the Fourth of July. He acquired them in places like Maryland, where our family would go summer camping on the state beaches, and brought them across state lines to our little suburban enclave in upstate New York. As soon as it was dark enough out, many of our neighbors would gather, the area kids eager to see what Mr. Kuo had in store that year. Sparklers for sure. Sometimes big noisemakers. And always more than a few showstopper rockets with brilliant flourishes of color. He would hand them out to us to dole out to the other children without a thought to liability.

The Status Kuo
@jaykuo America's founding fathers didn't live up to their ideals. That doesn't mean we should live down to their failures.
@jaykuo @georgetakei
Part of the problem is that we American kids who grew up in the 1950s were taught that America was classless, that racism had been conquered, that we had equality for all, and that no one was above the law. We were told these things had been accomplished. Instead of being told the truth, that they were aspirational, we would have kept working toward those goals. Instead we stopped trying because we thought we were already there. Now we know better.
@jaykuo *someone oughta oooopen up a window*
@jaykuo
You wrote a very interesting and informative piece. Thank you for that from a Swede.
And a happy Independence day to all of you in the US! 🎆🎆🎆
@georgetakei
@jaykuo As a US citizen I am proud for what they created, it is not perfect and we need to do more but we have a great nation. Still better than any other. I am American, not a GOP or democrat. My loyalty is to the constitution and not a party or person.
@HolgerFiallo @jaykuo by what metric are we better than any other country?
@unabogie Perhaps those of us who were not born here have a better appreciation of the US. Yes is not perfect but compare to others it is. Those of us who understand what not having basic rights believe in the US. This is why maybe a majority of US citizens sign for the military.
@HolgerFiallo sure, compare it to others. What should we compare first?
@unabogie Again US is not perfect but extremists from left and right destroy democracy. If people do not wake up that will happen to this great nation.
@HolgerFiallo going to mute you now because you seem incapable of answering a simple question.
@unabogie OK. Maybe you do not like my answer. This is why the US is great. We can just disagree and move on. Be safe and keep cool. Long life and prosper.
@HolgerFiallo @unabogie Hope you don't mind but I'll stick with my NHS and low gun ownership in the UK.
@jaykuo
That is so wonderful. I totally agree with you.
After growing up force fed on the mythology of the Pilgrims and Indians, I was sickened as I began to learn the truth about them. But the Promise of America is not the actions of the past it is what we bring to the future.
@jaykuo thanks. Sums up very well why I joined the Army and swore an oath to the IDEAL of America. And believe in the same principles decades later. Humans are good at believing in stuff, but suck at execution. True north is all we have to cling to. Two steps forward, one step back. If we're lucky enough to have such a positive ratio.
@jaykuo inherited both a promise and a mess … sums up my feelings. Thank you.
@jaykuo Enjoyed reading this personal piece. Thanks. I saw that musical, too, when I was young, and never forgot that song, and the way they gave themselves permission to put it off.
@jaykuo Amen, and by the way some of the founders OWNED humans. George Washington's teeth were not made of wood. His dentures were largely made of "volunteer teeth" from his human slaves.
@jaykuo But they absolutely did sing about which national bird to adopt in the entrance area of Independence Hall while the Declaration of Independence was being read: that was corroborated by several credible witnesses.
@jaykuo as someone said, “ its all the more remarkable that America was formed considering the founders were as flawed as the rest of us.”
