trying to find a community on here is so weirdly hard. i don’t know what it is about mastodon but i feel very disconnected from everyone somehow. hopefully that’ll change with time!
@Roofhare @RoLarenRED57 @irolita @Babcia54 @literalgrill @stevesplace @bhawthorne @j_g_fitzgerald thank you all so much for your recommendations !! will definitely be utilizing hashtags from now on
@seachanger thank you for responding !! glad you are too 🥰

@canineical

Keep adding hashtags to posts, search using hashtags to find people, read profiles and see what people put in them…

@canineical I was the same way here to start and it did get better.

Following hashtags directly helped me a good deal, and just plain following folks I had good interactions with. You can always unfollow if they suck later!

@canineical Hashtags are more powerful here. You can follow them by clicking on them and then clicking on the follow icon in that thread. Other people are doing that, too and some have found me without me trying. Searching for users is iffy right now. There are a lot of instances to hunt through. There is a project to get that working better. There's a lot of ongoing development, and it just keeps getting better.
@canineical Welcome. Search hashtags for topics & people who interest you. Good luck.
@canineical I started learning how to add more people and lemmy / kbin content to my federated TL. The local TL is anarchists hanging out. Pretty great
@canineical it takes time. Stick with it.
@canineical I felt the same way at first.
I started engaging w different people & now am familiar to others.
I think I was a little addicted to being fed horse crap on the angry bird place.
Good people here.
@canineical The lack of a recommendation algorithm and quote-tweets makes it really difficult to find new accounts to interact with. You're not imagining it; it's definitely real.

@canineical some people love hashtags. But I think that it's following people that makes the difference.

When I see someone posting interesting stuff, I tap on their avatar/picture left of their address at the top of the post. This takes me to their profile/"home page", where I can read about them and see some of their posts. If they look interesting, I can follow them on that page. Following lots of people gets you a community. You can also unfollow them later.

@canineical
You might try following some hashtags of topics that interest you. Then you'll see posts by others of similar interest whom you may want to follow.

@canineical that's how I've felt about Twitter, even after being on there for like 13 years or some shit.

Mastodon I was immediately welcomed and made to feel part of it.

@canineical Community is really hard at first, especially if you're starting fresh. But as always, finding your kindred will open doors. Welcome!
@canineical following people helps.
@canineical I think it’s easy to forget how long it takes to build social networks. Twitter was mainly isolated strangers for years and years.
@canineical What worked for me was to use the explore-local and -federated to find interesting people talking about stuff I was interested in, and to follow plenty of hashtags, ditto. Good luck with it!

@canineical welcome!

I feel you. For me it got better quickly, after I found a good app and after following more folks and hashtags (it seems to depend on the app how you can subscribe to a hashtag, but that made a huge difference for me). And then I was surprised by how kind some niche communities were/are.

Have fun exploring 👋

@canineical The real freedom of Mastodon & the Fediverse is your freedom to *build* a community yourself unimpeded by dictatorial algorithms like on the birdsite.
Follow accounts & ***boost posts*** with contents you might be interested in by checking out the *local* & *federated* timelines, and/or following hashtags of your interest, and they'll show up in your *home* timeline, which will get you connected as time flies by.

*Boosting posts*, that you like will let other Mastodonians instantly know, what you like.

Have fun & enjoy your freedom in the #Fediverse!
