I hope that there is still room for idealists, who think we can and should still strive for a government for the people and by the people. Real change is slow and generational, it isn't flashy, it's hard work.

I don't know exactly how to celebrate my country right now, but I'll raise my glass repeatedly to the people who are still trying when it feels hopeless, to the true patriots who fight for human rights and not corporate greed.

There is goodness in the world, even if it doesn't always feel like it, so I'll celebrate courageous acts of kindness, people who defend those who cannot defend themselves, people who stand up when others tell them to sit down, thank you for your service.

It might be nice to call out some people who are doing good work for other people, doesn't have to be political.

I've always admired Rep Katie Porter, watching her stand up to corporate bullies has always been a delight.

@RickiTarr I really wish I could vote for her. She'd be a great president, but I fear she is too smart and reasonable to want the job.
@joninalbany @RickiTarr
She's running for senator from California and I'm so excited that I finally get to vote for her because I'm in North Cal and she's always been in So Cal!!!!
@hannahshouse2 @RickiTarr cast an extra vote for me (kidding. mostly.)
@joninalbany @RickiTarr
I will definitely be speaking to everyone I know about her and then potentially going to sign up to door knock.

@RickiTarr

I've long admired, and benefited from, the way Jack Kornfield and the Insight Meditation Society are making a lovely and effective translation of Asian Buddhist teachings and practices for our contemporary Western world.

@RickiTarr
First, well put!

I'll shout out my neighbor. I recently learned he's a grade-A humanitarian.

@RickiTarr One of the hardest parts of moving recently was losing Katie Porter as my representative. She is unbelievably rad and I hope she's California's next senator.

@Holberg @RickiTarr

When she gets out her whiteboard, I lean in, because I know it's going to be good.

@RickiTarr Rep Porter is a freaking hero! She is one of the few politicians I will support in any damn run for political office she chooses
@RickiTarr
If more people like her became the normal in Congress - it would be working for the PEOPLE and there would be a clear path forward
@RickiTarr So with you on these words.
@RickiTarr well said. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ A most American view.
@RickiTarr I think one comment that resonated with me was that Independance isn't a "thing", it's a "process". Some parts of your society are still struggling to arrive at the stage where a man is judged by the content of his character, rather than the colour of his skin. And that's before the egregious erosion of so many rights there purely due to the fact that the SCOTUS is a political thing, rather than an utterly indepedant part of the judiciary.
@RickiTarr
I'd like to cheer for #Union organizers.
Their actions bring workers together to fight their real enemy (big business owners) and do more to heal the divisions in this country than any politician.
#CultureWars about beer or books or bathrooms are designed to distract us.
The real issue is whether a very small number of people should own essentially everything, or not.
#solidarity says NO!

Class War USA

Politics is a sideshow. Class war is the main event.

How Things Work
@RickiTarr It's so much harder when both Congress and our previous safety net, The Supreme Court, is against us.
@RickiTarr Idealism is about to be quashed. The problem is urgent and must be handled now. The voice of the common folk is ignored and only elites and their sycophants are heard. We must make it so the elites abandon this architecture for another day. Good luck and Godspeed.
@RickiTarr Hands down, the best ode to Independence day, I've read in a long while.
@RickiTarr
A kindred spirit indeed 🌝

@RickiTarr

Well written. I've been struggling with this holiday for the last few years (seven to be exact). You expressed what I should be celebrating perfectly. Thanks for that. If you were my neighbor, I'd bring you a piece of cake that we decorated with irony for the occasion.

@mmiasma Great Cake, I'd love some! LOL

@RickiTarr It seems that if you really want rapid and meaningful change, all you have to do is buy the Supreme Court.

Better start saving dimes while the climate still supports life.

@Tattered @RickiTarr Maybe it’s time for the liberals to go lower when the right goes low.
