#Norway is about to open the world's longest purpose-built bicycle and pedestrian tunnel in Bergen.

It's 2.8 km (1.7 miles) long, and filled with art...

It was conceived as an "escape tunnel" for an adjoining tunnel that carries light rail. Then somebody thought, why not open it to non-automobile traffic?

Takes 10 minutes to ride, 35 or so to walk.

Bergen's pedestrian and bike tunnel is now open to the public.

The Snoqualmie Iron Horse Tunnel near #seattle is longer at 2.5 miles, but it wasn't purpose builtβ€”it's a rail-to-trail refit.
@straphanger that pic looks so spooky. Better go in there with backup lights!
@straphanger of two minds on those. I like trails but we have such a shortage of rail capacity in a lot of areas, particularly rural ones, to loosing rail right of ways stings.
@straphanger that's such a good idea, instead of leaving the tunnel unused most of the time
@straphanger That is... Incredibly sensible. I wonder if they could do the same for the Chunnel?

@straphanger the purpose of transport is not very clear to the guy that explains the tunnel, it seems. He mainly sees health benefits.

And why is the example cyclist wearing hi-viz clothing? In a tunnel that is only for cyclists?

@CyclesSmiles It hasn't really opened yet. They're in the testing phase.

@straphanger for me, as Dutchie, that does not explain anything.

But in any case, this tunnel is another reason to think about a trip to Norway.

@straphanger @CyclesSmiles The tunnel is open now, it opened this spring. But this video is from before the opening.

Hi-viz clothing is quite normal as bike clothing in Norway, even though half the year is bright light, the other half is dark.

@tanketom @straphanger thank you for the explanation. Always glad to learn.
@straphanger I think it would take me longer to walk it, and since I would be gawking at the art, I might be a danger to others if I cycled this tunnel. But, it's a good use of the tunnels and I'd be all for it.
@straphanger Find someone who loves you as much as norwegians love tunnels πŸ₯°
@straphanger why is it a tram escape tunnel?
And where does it run to and from?
Many thanks if anyone knows and replies.

@straphanger This is amazing and I would walk the tunnel for the art.

I love it when the human mind takes something mundane and purposeful and then creates some beauty to go along.
