For those new here from #twitter to #mastodon may I suggest @FediFollows as well as @feditips. If you’re interested in running your own server I personally use @mastohost for managing my service, simple to setup and pay them, been using them for months and it’s cheaper than Twitter blue for many individuals, but inexpensively can scale if you become more popular as I have been. Enjoy your time tooting posts away #twittermigration #welcome
In addition to that advice to people new from #Twitter here on #mastodon if you need to replicate news feeds you can use https://press.coop for things like @Reuters and @CNN and @cnnbrk just like on Twitter but note these are not official accounts but they are using official posts from the Twitter accounts to recreate the experience. You'll find many volunteers have made great bots for all sorts of things. I even made a #twitch bot you can find in my github to post here. #twittermigration
press.coop

A mirror of Twitter press accounts.

Mastodon hosted on press.coop
Another tip for those new to #Mastodon and the #fediverse from the #twittermigration and #twitterexodus if you want to find people to follow of different interests the community trunk is a great resource to find people and announce you are there. I'm in the technology section and that's where many find me #welcome #twitter
I'll try to keep adding to this thread more tips

Trunk for the Fediverse

Another #mastodon tip for those fleeing from #twitter. If you’re looking for other servers to possibly join or even connect with, you can use https://fediverse.observer/ to find many different #fediverse servers not just Mastodon, it can even geographically map all the servers for you too. You don’t have to stay on your server you can always migrate your profile and following. #twitterexodus #twittermigration #welcome
Fediverse Observer checks all sites in the fediverse and gives you an easy way to find a home from a map or list or automatically.

Fediverse Sites Status. Find a Fediverse server to sign up for, find one close to you!

Another good trick that not many know about is to camp a web browser tab (don't know about no apps) on

[instance_name]/public/local/

This lets you watch the stream of public Local posts and get a sense of what that instance is all about

I have bookmarks for almost 30 /public/local/ pages that I cruise by every day

For one:

journa.host/public/local

H/T: @FinchHaven

Another tip for new #mastodon users from #twitter there are three main content feeds to be aware:

Following Feed: Those are only posts from who you’ve followed

Local Feed: Those are only posts from people on the server you have joined

Federated Feed: Those are all the posts the server you have joined can see from all the servers that server is federated with

#fediverse is a #decentralized and federated space. It’s not monolithic so you have to plant seeds. #twitterexodus #twittermigration

@chiefgyk3d I would also point out the Trending posts under Explore, as that is kind of an algorithmic feed.
