Another good trick that not many know about is to camp a web browser tab (don't know about no apps) on
[instance_name]/public/local/
This lets you watch the stream of public Local posts and get a sense of what that instance is all about
I have bookmarks for almost 30 /public/local/ pages that I cruise by every day
For one:
journa.host/public/local

Another tip for new #mastodon users from #twitter there are three main content feeds to be aware:
Following Feed: Those are only posts from who you’ve followed
Local Feed: Those are only posts from people on the server you have joined
Federated Feed: Those are all the posts the server you have joined can see from all the servers that server is federated with
#fediverse is a #decentralized and federated space. It’s not monolithic so you have to plant seeds. #twitterexodus #twittermigration
#Mastodon is more like a garden than a supermarket. There is no algorithm or points system feeding you a constant stream of content. You have to gradually cultivate a feed by discovering and following individuals and hashtags, pruning what you don't want, and engaging in one-on-one conversions.
Free Mastodon tip: you can follow a big general hashtag like #art, then mute styles you are not interested in, like #️⃣furry, to fine-tune your feed.

Another tip for those new to #Mastodon from #twitter. If you miss the twitter UI you can use this code in your appearance settings to make it look like Twitter made by @rolle https://github.com/ronilaukkarinen/mastodon-bird-ui
Also there are plenty of apps for mastodon on #Android and #iphone besides the official one which is honestly missing a lot of features. I use Toot! Personally on iOS and Megalodon on Android but there are plenty of apps like Cubes and more out there #twittermigration #twotterexodus #welcome
