More pets go missing around the Fourth of July than any other time of year. If your cat is afraid of fireworks, keep them inside and STAY HOME. Make sure they have cozy places to hide. Play music to help cover the loud noises. Keep windows shut - cats can easily bust through screens if they are scared enough. Draw the curtains to block out flashes of light. Use a calming pheromone diffuser such as feliway if you have one. And if they are up for it, play with them for distraction!

@CatsOfYore Our firework night in the Netherlands is New Year's Eve, and we stay at home with our dogs every time.

(Ah, I mean dog, we lost one due to old age since NYE, and I keep forgetting. Miss you, Mia!)

@TomSwirly @CatsOfYore We and our pup got to experience New Years Eve in the Netherlands for the first time this year. No amount of warning would have prepared us for how long and loud those fireworks were. Fourth of July is _nothing_ compared to Netherlands NYE

@robnich @CatsOfYore Now imagine what it was before the fireworks ban.

I hear that the ban isn't well enforced outside the big cities, but certainly in Amsterdam, it was a pale shadow of its original self, which was simply insanity.

Of course, we were in the Kinkerbuurt before, too.
