🌟NEW WEBSITE Autism Understood launching TODAY! 🌟

A project by Spectrum Gaming, created by autistic adults and young people!

When young people are diagnosed Autistic, they are not told what it is or what it means, often they will go online and look for answers. Most of that information is outdated and can be harmful.

So we have worked hard over the past year to create a new website AutismUnderstood that offers young people meaningful and correct information about autism. This information has been written by a wide range of people, including young people themselves.

This project has been led by a mix of adult staff and young people, with tons of contributions from the SG community, in addition to autistic adults, parents and professionals.

@rekindled @actuallyautistic this is great, though I've not looked at the site myself.

Being #AutisticOver50 though I found lots of good info oriented towards kids and parents, much harder to find good info for someone self dx in my sixties.

I'm on my second book and while they have been helpful to a complete novice, they don't relate directly to me because one was mainly Aspberger oriented from that someone of that gen, the second based on decades of work with kids, parents and teachers.

@doggle @actuallyautistic you might still find the website worth a look. Although it’s aimed at young people a lot of it will still be relevant to you.

With regard to books I’d recommend looking for ones that are recently published (within the last 3-5yrs) and written by autistic authors. If you’d like specific titles I can suggest a few I’ve found helpful as a late-dx adult?

@rekindled @actuallyautistic suggestions with some explanation would be very welcome.

I've read/nearly read Different Not Less by TG, Uniquely Human by BP, and will read Unmasking Autism next.

So any others with a sense of why would be great. 🙏

Have you found Aucademy on YouTube yet? Here is a playlist of their videos relating to late dx - I think one or two may be relevant to you? https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLth_YtwLg2GsE2XjoS20Upk99c4EIr2Rc

If you search on YouTube for ‘Aucademy PDA’ they have some videos for that too.

I liked Devon Price’s book that you mentioned, it reflected the journey I’ve gone through figuring stuff out for myself over the past 9-10yrs since first suspecting I could be autistic.

I would second the recommendation someone made for Luke Beardon. His golden equation Autism + Environment = Outcome is very valuable.

Plus:
The New Normal by David Gray-Hammond
Neuroqueer Heresies by Nick Walker
Both of these explore the neurodiversity paradigm and the social model of disability.

Neurotribes by Steve Silberman gives an historical perspective.

Would also heartily recommend the Inside of Autism course by Kieran Rose for getting an up to date understanding of autism. It really opened my eyes.

Shall ✔️ them out. I had to impress on my brother today at a family conference that my being an autistic was no mild matter...

@rekindled @actuallyautistic this is really excellent! A fantastic resource. Adding it to my bookmarks
@Zumbador @rekindled @actuallyautistic I really like it, too. I will tell my autistic pupil about it.

@MargotB @Zumbador @rekindled

Oh yes - Autism Understood seems like a wonderful resource!

I haven't had time to go through it ALL yet, but what I've seen is spot on.

And particular compliments on the clean layout / page design.
