Hey fedi.

Let's try not to be dickheads to the newcomers this time around, ok?
@Are0h .. except when they're Nazis. Important clarification.
@codinghorror LOL don't be glib. This doesn't really need to be said... unless you're a Nazi.
@Are0h ehhh it kinda does need to be said! out loud! quite a bit! these days especially!
@codinghorror to whom? people you know?
@Are0h to newcomers specifically, as indicated in the original post
@codinghorror Ha, we're gonna agree to disagree as I was talking about people that are already here.

But if you need to tell your people to not be nice to hateful people, do you.
@Are0h I apologize for the misunderstanding, but your post says "let's try not to be jerks to the newcomers", I interpreted it as "greet and welcome newcomers, but also please make sure these said newcomers are not nazis themselves in the process of greeting and welcoming them", I guess this is the problem with short form communication systems. Context is lost or not provided in the first place.
@codinghorror Hm. I'm not sure how you got that interpretation from me saying just don't be a dick to people, but ok.
@Are0h peril of short form communications, my friend. There's a reason why I'm distraught that instant message chat and highly similar systems are ruling the online world (which is pretty much the world) at the moment. We invented paragraphs, short stories, novellas, books.. and blogs.. for a reason.
@codinghorror But... you can do all that here... so...
@Are0h only because this instance overrode the default limit from 500 to some ridiculous number I strongly disagree with. I think it's .. wait for it.. over 9000

@codinghorror @Are0h FWIW ActivityPub at the protocol level also specifies an “Article” object. Mastodon posts are “Note” objects, with some admins just allowing for quite long ones.

But it’s an expected use case of the protocol that you might send long form articles back and forth.
