Hey #twittermigration folks - here’s some stuff that you should know about:
🥸 Add a bio and a profile pic. Make an #introduction post so folks know who you are. We’re all here to make internet friends, and it’s a lot easier to do that when you invite folks to get to know you.
✏️ You can edit your posts. It’ll notify people who boosted the post that you edited it. There will be an asterisk next to the post time, and you can click it to see what edits were made.
#️⃣ You can follow hashtags, and it’s a great way to find new folks to follow. When looking at a hashtag feed, there’s a follow button at the top right. Hashtagging your posts will get them seen by more people.
🚫 You can filter your feed by keywords, and those filters can be set on a timer or be indefinite. You can also mute people or entire communities on a timer or indefinitely. Curate your feed however you want.
⏱️ You can set your account to automatically delete posts based on a few criteria: things like number of fave/boosts it received, if it had media or is pinned, and how old it is. So if you set it to automatically delete anything older than 3 months that has less than 3 faves, it gets deleted. No more of this "list of every dumb thing I ever said" - you get to decide what stays and goes.
⚠️ You can hide your post behind a collapsible title called a CW. Call it a Courtesy Warning, or a Content Wrapper, or Consent Wanted - all are applicable. It's simply a way to give folks a heads up about what's in your post so they can decide whether or not they want to look at it. CWs are used for anything from discussion of violence to lewdness to the setup for a joke. It's an extremely useful tool, and great practice in respecting others.
📊 There is no Algorithm, just us. Feeds are chronological. If you favorite a post, the poster sees that you liked it and gets a little bit of joy, and that matters. Boost liberally. The numbers will probably be smaller than what you may be used to seeing, but they’re more reflective of reality. And they’re all people-first.
👥 While #Twitter was like a giant party in a stadium, the #Fediverse is more like a neighborhood with a bunch of backyard barbecues. It’s a collection of different communities that interact with each other, all of which have their own boundaries and affinities. And that’s okay - you’ll find your people and not need access to Everyone All The Time.
🚧 This entire network is run by folks who just want community not owned by a corporation. It’s all a work in progress, and there will be bumps along the way. And that’s okay - we’re taking back the town square, and that’s a messy process. Pardon the dust, and tip your instance admin so they can keep your community up and running.
🎉 Welcome to the future of social online! Have fun, get weird, and don’t forget to post pictures of your pets.
