"I hope Twitter implodes!" I don't. I hope someone else takes over & the site returns to how it was before. I have spent years of my life posting over there. It's like losing a close friend that introduced me to all of my other friends. It sucks & I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm sad about that.
@roxiqt I'm not sure electric car trump will give it up unless it implodes and his silent partners encourage him to fuck off so they can salvage some value out of it.
@roxiqt was explaining this to a friend. Was on since 2008, made some irl friends from there, etc. Sad to see it go down like it is. The people I’ve seen talk about it being useless are usually people who came to it late/post 2016 and unaware that at one time it was fairly fun. It’s like seeing your fav bar where you made a lot of good memories become a Nazi bar, but so it goes.
@kerouac666 @roxiqt Ugh. Great way to put it. I’ve been mourning ever since the Nazi bought the bar last year
@kerouac666 hmm,to me it was ok & I was on it not as often in 2012,& it was still ok after,Twit Musk bought it,but yes he has sure made a mess out of it,maybe I think it’s ok because I’m not in the same categories or category as a lot of you were on/are on,& yes a lot of bullying going on etc,but nothing new than any other social media’s out there.Though I agree he has completely wiped out another one of his big ideas,he fucked up.
@roxiqt
You aren't going to like who that someone else is.
@roxiqt yea. It’s a bummer to lose all those people, and the connections. Sadly, everyone saw it coming when Elmo took over, but it’s just sad to watch it go down and become that pile it is now
@roxiqt
It is a very difficult thing to go through but the advantage is you have a heads up and time to establish yourself here or elsewhere. You will reconnect with most of the people you want to. As far as your tweets, the hard truth is that you should ask for a download file and start preparing emotionally to see them disappear. I am sorry that we are all going through this but he is using it as a weapon.
@noondlyt I've been putting off getting the download since I moved here. The latest from twitter is basically the final push I needed. It's just so very sad and I can't even say I'm that much of a content creator
@noondlyt
Exactly,almost all of us are here from Twitter as we lost a few & not sure how to search our long time followers,one I follow on Twitter sadly hasn’t been on Mastodon as much,I just noticed they made a account here & hadn’t touched it since months ago,& yes long as you can get through Twit Musk’s enter a code we sent to access the downloading data section šŸ˜šŸ˜…
David August (@[email protected])

ā€œDavid, I’ll switch to Mastodon, how will I find my Twitter friends over there?ā€ Funny you should mention this, I wrote an article about that very thing: How to find your Twitter people on Mastodon: https://bit.ly/howtofindtwitterpeopleonmastodon #TwitterMigration #TwitterDown #RateLimitedExceeded

Mastodon
@roxiqt Twitter used to be my absolute favorite social network. Its slow death by strangulation has been really sad for me
@roxiqt same here. I've made so many friends there and I haven't found another site with such a large POC and/or disabled community
@tartdarling SAAAME. Honestly, twitter helped me get dx'd w/ADHD & probably helped save my life literally after I started having serious medical issues 5yrs back. The friends I made there pushed me to keep looking into it. Now I feel better than ever thanks to them (& a doc that finally listened)

@tartdarling @roxiqt happy to see you here!

I found peoples with disabilities here. I guess this place needs to grow a lot before it could feel like that international community on Twitter, but it just might.

@roxiqt Same. My account of over 16 years was suspended the other week (crazy timing!), I assume because I was testing beta software for a developer who accidentally misused the API and triggered automated account shutdowns. While I’ve appealed the suspension, I still haven’t even been told what I did wrong.

Still feeling emotionally sick over it. For all its ills, I’d curated a wholesome group of individuals and my private account was safe from trolls. ā€œMyā€ Twitter was surprisingly good.

@roxiqt I have just taken the first step by removing the app, and feeling better already.
@roxiqt Been using the Internet since we'll before it became a commercial space
Seen a lot of sites come and go. Twitter is just one more for the scrap heap.
@roxiqt I’ll be honest, when I read that announcement today, I literally cried. Twitter has been huge for me for over a decade.
@roxiqt I feel the same. Over 10 years cultivating friends and favorite follows.
šŸ’”
@roxiqt Same. It's really upsetting to think about how many friends I've made over there & how I've cultivated my followers & follows.. and doing that all over feels absolutely daunting 😟
@roxiqt It would be great if there could be at least one altruistic and philanthropic billionaire to buy it out and *actually* run it as the essential public utility that it is
@roxiqt this whole situation is making me re-evaluate how I view online communities on social media platforms. How can we build communities when the platform is run into the ground, an account can be banned for anything Musk doesn't like, and there's all the bigotry/hatred to contend with on top? One insanely rich man essentially destroyed a multitude of communities/networks on Twitter, for no legitimate reason. Goes to show how fragile our online lives are when they're held by billionaires.
@splendor_solis @roxiqt
You can probably apply all of that to real life as well
@BigAngBlack @roxiqt I don't quite agree. Self-organized, real life communities aren't controlled by the people who own SM platforms, or anyone else generally speaking. But when a community is formed and based solely on/in a SM platform, it is completely vulnerable to the will of the owner of that platform.

@splendor_solis @BigAngBlack @roxiqt

Offline, the phenomenon is comparable to a single-factory town that has been there for multiple generations that gets taken over by a hedge fund who loots the company and closes the factory. Or runs it into the ground through attempts to cut costs for short term profit. The community everyone built is tossed off like trash.

Online or offline, billionaires are not compatible with any sort of democratic or free society.

@Mikal @BigAngBlack @roxiqt

Good example, seems to me that billionaires aren't just incompatible with democracy/freedom, but also with community.

@roxiqt It's a lost cause already.
@roxiqt I agree! I have lost several social media "worlds" over the years. (One of them was even my fault: I had to close up my very active blog for personal reasons.) I would love to reconnect with those communities, but I can't and never will be able to. Twitter is not and never has been perfect, but it is special to me.
@roxiqt we`re gonna feel the same when our world Earth implodes...but we`ll be losing a lot more than friends ...
@roxiqt I keep thinking that the dickhead will sell twitter -- i just hope he doesn't sell it to tik tok
@roxiqt he wants to sell it to the Saudis. He may have also pitched it to other governments.
@roxiqt Same it’s where I got my daily astrology forecasts from,though it never was the greatest at all,oh well I’m going to do my best to give anyone insight with astrology like the countless others on Twitter but hey it might be much better here? It sure is quiet & no fighting,which is nice than Twitter had.
@roxiqt I feel the same. The end of what was a vibrant community of writers who taught me so much.
@roxiqt It's sad to lose something that was used and appreciated by a lot of people, but the old Twitter died already; what remains now is a bloodthirsty zombie and dying is unfortunately the best thing that can happen to it.
@roxiqt the amount of people there i won't be able to contact anymore, i'm def mourning a lil
@roxiqt Sure it sucks, I feel similarly to my relationship with instagram. Part of me though feels thought that the users have the power- its ultimately up to us to put our efforts into better, more sustainable efforts that aren't vulnerable to being sabotaged by one greedy or naive billionaire.

@roxiqt This needs to be voiced more often.

It's easy to celebrate the failings of Twitter and its bad practices, and that's fine. Twitter sucks.
But at the same time, one must remember the people. People who just want to socialize with their close ones, shackled to a sinking ship simply because everyone else is there. Switching elsewhere isn't easy when you can't bring the rest with you.

This isn't just about a platform. It's about tearing apart social circles. And it sucks.

@roxiqt I hate that it can hold so many of my friends and memories hostage. I hate that these things can be sold to a clump of mayonnaise that decided to make itself every bodies problem. It sucks, and it feels awful. right there with you.
@roxiqt I totally understand and this is how I feel about it, too.
