Stop worshipping billionaires.

Elon Musk threw away tens of billions of dollars to buy Twitter, and has spent the last year running it into the ground.

When billionaires take control of our most vital platforms for communication, it’s not a win for free speech.

It’s a win for oligarchy.

@rbreich it feels intentional.
@NiaMolinari @rbreich Yep. Running it into the ground is entirely the point.
@HellQuacker @NiaMolinari @rbreich genuine question but why would he want to run it into the ground after spending $44 billion? That seems like a lot of money to spend, even with his wealth.

@Gashnor @NiaMolinari @rbreich I think his concept of the value of money leaves something to be desired; he was born a rich kid, and had everything handed to him.

Also, he may consider it to be money well spent if it lets him be a troll to his heart's (obvious) content. "Making libs cry while I LOL" is clearly on his personal wish list, and he's clearly not above killing the bird site if those he opposes suffer in the process.

@Gashnor @HellQuacker @NiaMolinari @rbreich removimg a well known tool for the left of the political spectrum to connect and organise is money well spent to these psychopaths
@Squillifish @Gashnor @HellQuacker @NiaMolinari @rbreich I think you are giving him more credit than he deserves
@sarcevic @Squillifish @Gashnor @NiaMolinari @rbreich Possibly, but he shouldn't be underestimated or dismissed. He can do a LOT of damage (and already has), whether that's his intention or not (though I sincerely believe that's his intention).
Musk's ex-wife texted him to fight Twitter 'woke-ism': report

"Can you buy Twitter and then delete it, please!?" Riley allegedly texted Elon Musk on March 24. "America is going INSANE."

Insider

@Gashnor @HellQuacker @NiaMolinari @rbreich the anti-CCP YouTuber serpentza does a really good analysis on it, in my opinion. 1) Musk owns factories in China. 2) Chinese Twitter accounts kept getting labeled "state affiliated media."

Destroy the platform, and you force people to migrate to social networks that are less antagonistic towards state-owned media.

Elon Musk buys Twitter for China - The Controversy Explained

YouTube

@HellQuacker @NiaMolinari @rbreich I don’t really buy that this is intentional because what exactly does it do? He kills Twitter then people move on to Mastodon or Blue Sky or whatever other social media platform.

Hell Twitter was far behind that of Facebook in terms of active users when he bought it which is why people didn’t understand why musk bought it.

Occam’s razor: Musk is doing stupid shit because he is stupid.

@NiaMolinari
He has the maturity of a teenager. Of course it’s intentional. He’s been over his head from the beginning and he can’t accept that fact.
@nancyann @NiaMolinari by “the beginning” do you mean when he took over Tesla?
@TheJamieDub1
I was talking about twitter, but yeah. If he’d fired everyone at Tesla it would in the same state as twitter. He’s not the genius his bros believe he is.
@nancyann appreciated. And I’m sorry to “whataboutery” on your comment.
@TheJamieDub1
No problem. I think the Twitter debacle has shown “the emperor has no clothes”. Something the world needed to learn. It’s all been PR.

@nancyann @TheJamieDub1

He hated everybody at Twitter before he bought it, because he considered them too "woke".

@NiaMolinari @rbreich “When billionaires take control of our most vital platforms for communication”

Twitter is not vital at all. At all! The fact that we treat such a trivial limited website as important reflects more badly on us than them. We should know better. And definitely governments should not be using such proprietary platforms to communicate with the public. That's just embarrassing.

@stardust @rbreich the human race has never been the brightest bulb, just violent.
@NiaMolinari @rbreich Smart and violent aren't mutually exclusive, unfortunately. Hence why our violence is significantly more so. The road to ubiquitous wisdom is an uphill battle.

@NiaMolinari @rbreich You're gonna love the following quote, considering your profile header:

“If men had wings and bore black feathers, few of them would be clever enough to be crows.” —Henry Ward

#crows #intelligence

@stardust @NiaMolinari @rbreich many countries (at least outside USA) still have public service broadcasters who also run real time news/websites, which are ideally suited for communicating important news from local and central governments, as well as local news outlets. Public sector agencies usually also have their own independent online presences..
@rbreich
Also - stop thinking they’re smart.
@nancyann @rbreich
And - absolutely stop thinking, they’re acting out of altruism.
@PG3undPannen
We’re safer if we believe they’re all evil, at least until they prove otherwise.
@rbreich What he did was splinter the internet. I don't even think it was done intentionally. He's just an idiot.
@applebaumian I think he wanted a command & control platform to steer loyal zealots who help guide societal communication in his interest.
@rbreich

@rbreich I'm hoping that this latest "rate limited" thing pushes more people to platforms like this.

Twitter still has some uses (I can use it to entice people to read/listen to my work, I can hear the voices of people who aren't usually listened to) but even then, it's been failing at even that for a while.

@rbreich
All those blue checks seem fake from supposed states like TN, SC etc. I'm betting 90% are Russian and Saudis and maybe even pure AI bots to mix in the false narrative to confuse people - just like I saw in 2016 with a fake Dem saying since Bernie lost they're switching to tRump.
@rbreich It's an argument against billionaires even existing. It is also an argument for large, socially relevant platforms being centralized at all.
@DanielTuttle Did you mean to say "against" again, rather than "for"?
@hosford42 yeah 😄 I had a stroke so aphasia does pop up now and again
@DanielTuttle I skipped the stroke and went straight for the aphasia.
@hosford42 Honestly, I'm not even sure how much is poststroke vs too much constant cortisol production ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Please do more to help support Fediverse and Mastodon. This is the best way to take power from the Billionaires.
@rbreich incompetence or on purpose?
@rbreich
Richest man in the world’s best trick is becoming the richest man in the world. Some good ideas have come from his companies but not necessarily from Elon. He’s destroyed a platform that played a vital role in sharing important news and advisories. While Twitter’s destruction may have been the plan along, it should concern all of us that SpaceX and StarLink operate at his whim.
Elon's Plan to Disinform

The Free Speech Absolutist, Elon Musk, has just totally throttled valuable voices on the left. Early this morning, Twitler in Chief Elon Musk announced that he has temporarily limited our ability to communicate and receive news from our preferred sources by restricting unverified

Post News
@rbreich Bonesaw in particular I reckon.
@rbreich He's going to lose Millions of users with this latest stunt of limits or pay.

@rbreich One of the only few good things this all does is make people more aware of the danger of such entities

The more know abour decentralized social media the better

@rbreich Stop being hypocritical, delete your Twitter account and join Mastodon full time! I bet you posted this on both
@rbreich might as well say the number...$40B. Some of it was "his". Some of it was other billionaire's (who cares), some of it was bank investment...and depending on ye old banking shell game some of that could be regular individuals money. Or maybe they jack up your fees to cover the cost. Who knows?
@rbreich I say this all the time. a lot of people worship the wealthy.
@rbreich A majority of the money he used to buy Twitter is OPM, just like his other projects.
@rbreich Don't forget that Musk acquired Toshiba's solar division years ago and then buried all the losses from mismanagement, magically disappearing a potentially viable competitor.
@rbreich (whispers) maybe that means he didn't actually throw away that money, but got exactly what he paid for, and why he paid that much
@rbreich It was on behalf of the oligarchs that Musk bought Twitter and intentionally destroyed it.
@rbreich Seems like a loss for the oligarchy. He's killing the platform b/c he's broke.

@rbreich Does the math work out to roughly 4 and a half bucks per human alive on earth to recoup the purchase price of the equivelent of a digital post it pad?

This is certainly A way to go about s thing, but would ordinarily not endear praiseworthy adoration and admiration, I'm not sure "Don't do that!" is going to help that much but completely understand the desperate confused attempts at reason.

@rbreich I don't think you have to worry about that here. Most people that I've chatted with are ready to eat the rich and use their bones to build houses.

Myself included.
