Pour one out for the dozen remaining Twitter engineers, chained to their H1-B visas, forced to spend their 4-day weekend implementing and then correcting for all of Elon's dumbest ideas.
@evacide They only have to hold on for another couple of weeks, before the Canadian "3-year visa to any H1-B holder in the US" kicks in on July 16th.

@maswan @evacide “As of July 16th 2023, H1-B holders in the US and their accompanying immediate family members will be eligible to apply to come to Canada. The approved applicants will receive an open work permit for up to three years, which means they can work for almost any employer in Canada.”

Huh. I thought you were kidding.

@andymoose @maswan @evacide

Yep, very different outlooks on this side of the border. I mean, the US has already done all of this effort to vet people, why throw that away?

We're importing 500k people every year and the US authorizes like 80k H1-Bs / year. So Canada can absorb that.

@andymoose @maswan @evacide That’s awesome and it’s actually good for America, too. It helps compensate for our super stupid immigration policy a little bit. Now, bright foreigners will be more likely to take up an offer for an H1B because that means they’ll have a guaranteed path to Canada even if they can’t land a permanent status in the US.
@evacide Knowing that a new, even dumber idea will come rolling down before they can correct for the last one.
@evacide The funniest thing is that apparently they are DDoS:in themselves with these changes, because forced login leads for loops of fetching content which is never acquired.
Scale this to every instance or use-case in the world which used to show Tweets without logging in.
@evacide it's kind amazing that twitter's garbage management not only ruins the day of twitter staff, but also apparently every other social media site's weekend as well. I've seen devs for Bluesky & Mastodon make posts that amount to "Elon ruined my weekend, again" and with instagram's auth being flaky, even Meta's SREs are having a bad weekend.
@evacide it’s going to be interesting to see what happens when Canada opens their doors to H1B holders.

@nafiul

In the immortal words of Ross Perot, expect there to be "a giant sucking sound"

@evacide

@evacide it’s cute you think they even get the four-day weekend. 🤨
@evacide major incident response sucks enough with a solid crew and high morale. This is the IT equivalent of Pickett's Charge, just doomed

@evacide it should be considered slavery imo.

Like imagine being chained to your visa while being a brown person and your CEO is now and open white supremacist.

@evacide
Fixing Elon's dumb Twitter ideas is reliable lifetime employment. A steady job, if you can stand it.
