Keeping this here for anyone who might need it. Please share freely so we can end the need to share it at all :/
@Chimaera i wasn't familiar with this program. Thanks for posting!

@Chimaera

glad you posted this, but it is an outrage that any parent would not be supportive of their kids, gay/straight/trans/non binary, etc. if you cant love and support your kids, you not only dont deserve to be a parent, you dont deserve to breathe....

@Chimaera I don't know if this needs saying here, but don't monitor your teenage kids' online behaviour in detail. Hug them, love them, talk to them, answer their questions, show an interest, support them. But don't watch their every online move. It never works like you think it does.
@Chimaera
Parents should help their kids, not become another problem. ๐Ÿ˜ข
@Chimaera what's that Trevor chat about?
Get Help

Get immediate help 24/7/365. The Trevor Project's crisis counselors are just a text, chat, or phone call away. Completely confidential and free LGBTQ hotline.

The Trevor Project
@Chimaera to anyone interested, this is good and a good feature, but shady parents with some IT knowledge can still be spying on web traffic or its metadata on the network or through a gateway/firewall/router. If you set up a VPN on a shady parentโ€™s network you may need a plausible excuse. Say itโ€™s for stealing Netflix or whatever. Since theyโ€™re shady they might be cool with petty crime.
@Chimaera @malcircuit for similar but different reasons, thehotline.org also has features for privacy and quick exits. It's a a site for getting help and resources regarding domestic violence
@Chimaera I'm not sure I understand what it's advertising. Looks like a chat room embedded into a website that you close by hitting ESC three times instead of CTRL-W?

@Polychrome same question. Plus, I don't recall there is any JavaScript feature to enable a website to delete the browser history.

@Chimaera

@Deuchnord @Polychrome @Chimaera I haven't tried this, but it sounds like you could make it work as long as there are no redirects and the user visits only one url. https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/Window/history

That said, this sounds really delicate and like something a browser vendor could close as a security hole at any time, so using incognito mode is likely to be more robust.

Window: history property - Web APIs | MDN

The Window.history read-only property returns a reference to the History object, which provides an interface for manipulating the browser session history (pages visited in the tab or frame that the current page is loaded in).

@Chimaera ah jeez look, as a parent and former deviant youth, no please please don't do this.

Just use a different device. Chatting with people online your parents explicitly forbid is not going to end well. Closing browser windows as soon as they walk in is obvious and frankly irritating as heck, infact I set one of my kids computers to save a screenshot to the desktop once a minute to remind him to be smarter about it.

As a once quite deviant youth, I'd suggest using connection sharing to another device such as with a hidden local pivate wifi and then, on top of that, using something with no local storage for your terminal. I used a laptop with no hard drive and no battery and a wifi card with a mac address my father had never had in his dhcp logs when I was learning about coming out. My mother had a habit of ripping devices out of my hands and reading my journal, etc. Any device with ddr3 ram or newer should work fine.

The local library is a great resource as well (depending on local attitudes). You are not the first oppressed soul seeking truth, and there are correct ways to do it. They can help. Learn about good opsec and be safe.

@silver do you honestly think the average parent in this country would understand the tech behind even half of what you wrote? For real? Lots of kids at my childโ€™s school had to be loaned a basic laptop by the Dept of Ed. during the pandemic so they could study from home.
@Chimaera My kid's public school loaner laptop use agreement allows them to take periodic screenshots and makes them available to parents on request. Assuming your opponent is foolish is not safe. Your comment offers no useful suggestions.
@Chimaera Im glad I've never needed this, thank you for making more people aware and making me more able to help people in need.

@Chimaera Gonna have to keep mentioning this when this comic shows up

Web pages can't clear your browser history. It can only rewrite the current entry, meaning if you were on any other trevor project pages, they would remain.

If you want to not save your history, use private/incognito browsing mode.
