Top Four: Phish songs!

Tiff finally let me do this.

101: 64 Days of Phish — Top Four

Our favorite Phish songs. (Finally.)

@marcoarment
Guelah Papyrus
Stash
Cavern
Split Open and Melt
@marcoarment This is the harmless kind of cult I am fine with. 😂😂😂

@marcoarment My old boss would see Phish 7-8 times a year, when possible, and would play it for us in the car whenever he has the chance, so I make this statement honestly and without shade or judgment:

I was previously unaware Phish had “songs”.

@marcoarment I can only hope you did my “Top Four Vodka Flavors” suggestion at the same time.
@marcoarment This is TOP 1 in The Most Marco Episode list.
@marcoarment This better not awaken anything in me. I don’t think I can handle becoming a Phish Phan.

@marcoarment when using the overcast app, is the publisher of a podcast able to tell if we just pull the slider over to count it as listened to?

Just hypothetical….er…..Asking for a friend…

@bdaman Nope. All they know is whether you downloaded the episode.
@marcoarment live? Talking about jams? I mean the lyrics are kitsch but the jams are everything

@marcoarment OK, this is hard:

4. Heavy Things
3. Bathtub Gin
2. 46 Days
1. Chalk Dust Torture

Honorable mentions: Pebbles and Marbles, Cavern, AC/DC Bag
Covers: Walk Away, Funky Bitch

@marcoarment (Still can't believe we got Bathtub Gin, Chalk Dust Torture, *and* Pebbles and Marbles at that Jones Beach show)

@irace @marcoarment it would take a while to come up with my top 4, but 46 Days and DwD are shoe ins. Wilson is probable.

Covers: Crosseyed & Painless, Golden Age, Funky Bitch

@abrad45 @marcoarment Their Golden Age has charm but Trey *really* cannot sing that song.
@irace @marcoarment hard to argue with that. I feel like Trey cannot sing many songs he tries to sing, so maybe I’m giving it a pass because of how much I love the music
@marcoarment Saw this during setbreak of Mike Gordon in Pittsburgh tonight. They closed the show with Funky Bitch which made me think of Build and Analyze (right?)
@ceri Correct!
@marcoarment Really enjoyed the episode. Great choices by both of you for different reasons. I thought your last pick was going to be Reba, but can’t argue with Hood! I also thought Tiff might choose It’s Ice… I’m definitely more of a music fan rather than lyrics, but have always appreciated the lyrics in that song.
@marcoarment Marco, I would normally never dare to “well actually” you, but this is a matter of grave importance: you said Phish and the Dead have no similarities, then talked about Meatstick in the next sentence. That song is literally the Dead’s “Fire on the Mountain” with different lyrics!
@marcoarment Further notes:
• The last verse of Meatstick is Japanese, not German!
• Does Tiff know about “The Curtain With”? The “With” bonus section is where “Rift” came from, originally much slower.
• “Carini” from the 11/17/22 TAB/Goose show is maybe the best version of that song that’s ever been played
• You were so close to being able to title this “_46_ Days of Phish”
@dwineman @marcoarment I don’t know what half these words mean, but I am here for it

@marcoarment that part of Meatstick is Japanese. They played it that way for the first time in Tokyo.

I loved this episode so much. I always refer to songs like YEM, Divided Sky, Slave, and Hood as "epics."

8/21/15 is amazing show and it has a great Slave to close Set 2 with Farmhouse and First Tube encore. There's also a Hood earlier in the set.

Picking four is nearly impossible, but these four songs always get me pumped up:

1. Tweezer
2. Hood
3. Ghost
4. Sand

@marcoarment Did you know Trey wrote Slave (among others) with childhood friend Dave Abrahams, who helped design Swift and SwiftUI? Worlds collide.
@marcoarment listened to this on monday. Great episode. Not a phish listener myself but I can get behind the jam love. I listen to a lot of progressive metal, virtuoso stuff and it reminds me of that 🙂
