Imagine if the fate of the planet captivated the world as much as the fate of one deep sea submersible.
@Sheril We are essentially living in a deep-sea submersible. And we're crapping on the floor...
@toxtethogrady @Sheril That is our fate and the submersible we’re riding in has been provided by fossil fuels and capitalism. We think we’ll come around when we face death, but it will take us faster than we have time to react.
@Sheril Excellent point. But also, if the planet had only 96 hours of oxygen left, I guarantee it would!
@benjedwards @Sheril people would steal oxygen tanks while the politicians ask the billionaires what they should be doing
@Sheril I think maybe hope is the difference here.
If there are powerful institutions that profit from the death of submariners, then they are flying under the public radar.
@muzzle @Sheril we need to know how much was spent on the rescue effort
@Sheril weird comparison IMO
@Sheril Or even the fate of the hundreds of people drowning in the Mediterranean - none of whom, I would guess, are there for an expensive thrill.
@lmgenealogy Of course, we should send journalists to follow the migrants to see them die. A live stream when the boat is sinking should be exciting
@Tarh Of course not. Nobody live streamed the Titan’s demise either. But it could certainly be more widely reported/discussed, and more effort could be made (by all countries) to save their lives.
@Tarh And I don’t think the plight of the Titan’s occupants was unimportant, either. I just think it’s interesting that it was non-stop, front-page news, whereas the other deaths are mentioned in passing and forgotten.
The world is dying every day, but billionaires dying stupidly, now THAT’s a story @Sheril
@Sheril They should put up a carbon countdown or something.
@Sheril try couching it in terms of the threat to young blonde women and the press will SELL the story 24 7.
@Sheril In retrospect one wonders why anyone thought going to view what is arguably the most famous shipwreck in the world, in a vehicle named for aforesaid ship, was a good idea.
@Sheril Well the billionaires still think they'll get away.
@Sheril we need more spectacle. Boiling oceans, acid rain with buildings and people melting, dozens of volcanic eruptions, cities on fire, etc on a weekly basis would do.
@Sheril Imagine if everyone turned off their cell phone and looked around at they world they have created, instead. Or if that isn't available within the available mental viewfinder, then just look at the blue sky, the flowers, the earth, the sun, the sea..... Its been a while since you did, Reader. Welcome back.
@Sheril People will consume journalism that gives them a voyeuristic thrill. For many the save the planet idea boils down to what? I can't have so much stuff? No way!
@Sheril Maybe we need to make the world smaller
@Sheril There were some elements that made this a uniquely compelling event.
1) Small number of people
2) Titanic association
3) Exotic craft
4) Deep-sea location
5) Multinational response
@Sheril Stupid news story became an inadvertent microcosm of the world, though.
@Sheril It’s perhaps fitting that the CEO of the submersible company died in this dive. Perhaps the company will die too.
@Sheril you mean american media
@Sheril fact. There are people more worthy of being headline news than rich people who decided to put their lives at risk to visit a graveyard.
@Sheril Imagine 1000s dying everyday in wars and the media yawns. A few spoiled, entitled Oligarchs and an international search team forms instantly! we suffer from ADHS as a people! Bright shiny objects distract us like 2 yr olds! #WhatRLivesOf5GizzilionairesWorth
@Sheril Shallow sea submersible put to extreme service.

@Sheril What a boring dystopia we live in, consuming and waiting for the inevitable, instead of trying to fix it.

A century in the future we'll be seen as the boomers who were sitting on their asses while the world burned.

They'd be the ones responsible for putting out the fire and recovering from the damage.

@Sheril Natural selection eliminated a billionaire from the world at least.
@Sheril honestly this is very deep and it’s all wild thoughts
@Sheril Sadly I think it’s a flaw in the majority of humans’ brains, which will lead to our extinction.

Jalopnik
@Sheril I think my heart just sank reading this.. pun intended
@Sheril Indeed. The planet is being cooked while government's are fiddling.
