Why aren’t more people talking about @omnivore as a read it later service?

It’s free, open source, works more reliably than Pocket or Instapaper, zero limitations like Matter - all entirely free even if you use their server. Self-hosting totally an option too.

It’s frankly brilliant.

Omnivore is the free, open source, read-it-later app for serious readers.

Omnivore
@wiredfire First I’ve heard about it, but this sounds awesome! Thanks for the heads up about it!

@ktnjared you’re welcome! Happy to spread some noise about it. For years it’s been Pocket or Instapaper, then recently Matter, as options but they all have their challenges. Omnivore is at least as good as each of them, with zero paywalled features or limits.

Really pulls the rug from Matter’s relatively recently developed business model 😅 Pocket & Instapaper at least have their legacy to trade on, I guess?

@wiredfire @omnivore their text to speech feature is just too good. Blows the competition away.
@omnivore @Suzie97 Matter's text to speach I'd say is fractionally better, a little more natural sounding, but there's very little in it. Certainly nothing that's realistically going to sway someone.
@wiredfire @omnivore I did use matter’s text to speech before it was locked on a paywall. sounded pretty unnatural to me. Not sure if they’ve improved it now. But the ultra realistic voice option in omnivore is just fantastic.
@Suzie97 @omnivore considering it’s entirely without charge as well is brilliant. I’m not sure how Matter and others can hope to compete with FOSS when this is the quality we’re getting.
@wiredfire @omnivore Makes sense. Matter still has its social media features which due to being Twitter exclusive I've never tried. Not sure if that the team actually treats it as something that adds value or just a gimmick.
@Suzie97 @omnivore problem is linking your service to some centralised platform puts you at their mercy, as a great many have recently found with Twitter and Reddit!
@wiredfire I’ve been using it for a couple months now, and it’s been great! Super easy to export notes and highlights if you want to keep them in #logseq or another notetaking app too!
@wiredfire @omnivore It’s great. It took me a while because the Mac app still looks like an alpha and I opened that first, but on the web & iPhone it’s really good.
@wiredfire the one thing that really got me stuck to using Matter is the great text-to-speech conversion. Voices are close to natural human ones and the progress of my listening is tracked on the text as well, so I can easily switch back and forth. Is this something that @omnivore supports or is planning to?
@preslavrachev @omnivore Omnivore has solid text to speech. Depending you you speak to it’s either about as good as or better than Matter’s.
@wiredfire @omnivore that's cool, thanks for the link!
@lps @omnivore you’re welcome! Hope you enjoy checking it out 😁
@wiredfire @ellane I’ve been a big Pocket user but Omnivore has taken its place. I don’t need the bells and whistles and Omnivore has great integration with Obsidian too.
@jcosky @ellane same re: Pocket plus they have been actively removing features from their iPhone app which is a weird move. I’ve not used Obsidian before but thinking I should check it out 😁
@wiredfire Just switched to it from Pocket after I read they are dropping the integration with my Kobo e-reader soon. So far absolutely impressed, it does all I need.

@Fiddler @omnivore Just heard about the Kobo feature being dropped earlier today. Turns out someone's been working on letting Omnivore be a "drop-in" replacement 😁

@wiredfire @Fiddler @omnivore I didn't know they were to quit that, mostly the only function I still need it from pocket.

Just today I see that pocket import a medium article better than omnivore, but that will change

@deimidis @Fiddler @omnivore I have much more faith in Omnivore actually acting on reported issues with article importing than Pocket at this point 😁

@wiredfire @deimidis @Fiddler we’ve been known to ignore an importing error or two 😬.

Medium definitely can be a problem but always trying to improve.

@omnivore @wiredfire @Fiddler I will try to find the problem, but I can promise anything. BTW I'm really happy with omnivore.
@deimidis @Fiddler @omnivore can’t fault your honesty 😉 😁
@wiredfire @Fiddler @omnivore That sounds great! #kobo integration is the only reason I use #pocket and I'll really miss it so I'm looking for an alternative.
@wiredfire Woah... and to think I've scrolled past the omnivore plugin a few times in the Obsidian plugins repository. This looks fantastic.
