If I were so obscenely rich I could drop half a million to take a family member on some risky trip to, say, the bottom of the ocean, I'd probably consider dropping a few thousand extra to hire someone to research whether the guy running the trip was a total clown who ignored blatant engineering and safety issues https://newrepublic.com/post/173802/missing-titanic-sub-faced-lawsuit-depths-safely-travel-oceangate
Missing Titanic Sub Once Faced Massive Lawsuit Over Depths It Could Safely Travel To

Court documents reveal a former OceanGate employee had several safety complaints over the tourist submersible—and then he was fired.

I'm not trying to be a ghoul or anything here but I'll bet $20 they did more due diligence on their limo driver than the guy taking them to the bottom of the ocean in a sub that looks like it was ordered from wish.com
@AbandonedAmerica You are not being a ghoul. I would have thought the same. When the story broke out I honestly wondered who thought it was a good idea.

Wish
@mikkergp oh boy, that actually IS pretty badass. That's how they get you.

@AbandonedAmerica I wish we could stop worrying about being perceived as ghouls. These are rich monsters who used the proceeds of their evil to take an extravagant vacation that backfired on them, and now the American taxpayers are paying for the Coast Guard to piss away time and resources searching for their dead asses.

Fuck them. I hope they die horribly and I will be glad when they do. They don't give a shit about my class so why should I give a shit about theirs?

@AbandonedAmerica
My only experience of the materials the sub is made from is with hiking poles where my options seemed to be do I want them to break by shattering (carbon fibre) or break by bending (aluminium) when used by someone with limited skills (me)
@AbandonedAmerica OMG! Exactly this!! I'm sick of the breathless media on this. These jerks saw what they were getting into, signed waivers, and put their lives in the line all to do something cool. We shouldn't have multiple coast guards out there looking for them.

@AbandonedAmerica You're not being a ghoul at all, at least not IMO. It's a valid question. Some people have more money than brains. If I was a billionaire, the last thing I'd think to do is go to the bottom of the ocean. Why? If I want to see the Titanic, thousands of pictures of it have been taken since Robert Ballard found it in 1985. I can look at those in my megamansion.

Not saying these people deserve to die, but even a 1% chance of something going wrong is too high a risk at 12,000+ ft.

@AbandonedAmerica "but he's rich like us, he must be trustworthy, right?"
@AbandonedAmerica It's fine. You can be a ghoul about this.
@AbandonedAmerica We are supposed to believe you did that?
@notabird I have no idea what you are talking about, I'm afraid
@AbandonedAmerica My only condolences so far are for Camping World and Charles Darwin.
@AbandonedAmerica If I were that rich I could make that consideration, I would probably write the trip money off for community college scholarships.
@GruntyGinMan Nobody gets that rich giving a shit about other people, buddy!
@AbandonedAmerica @GruntyGinMan There are people who do that kind of thing but they're usually folk who got rich "accidentally" like Bill Gates.

Madsen's mistress reveals details of kinky sex on board submarine

Peter Madsen, 47, enjoyed 'strangulation sex', starred in several porn films, and had brought at least one of his mistresses on the submarine, a Copenhagen court heard today.

Daily Mail
@lutzray oh, see, I actually feel really, really bad for Kim Wall, whereas I am struggling to find sympathy for the Titanic expedition folks 😔
@AbandonedAmerica Well, to quote every DSV designer I've heard - the thing was designed badly. The bow viewport was only rated for 1300 meters coz it was out-of-spec and, frankly, negligent homicide charges should be considered.
@Gojira1000 that's my point - you'd think any engineer who gave this thing even a cursory glance would laugh at the idea of traveling to the bottom of the ocean in it
@AbandonedAmerica Exactly. How many people are being put at risk for these uber rich types that had that kind of change to go on this high risk trip. Same with space. As a tax payer I do not want to subsidize this. THere needs to be some sort of bond to cover recovery expenses AND USCG or other public agencies should only use volunteers for rescues

@AbandonedAmerica

Slightly perverse incentives on that job. Just say yes.

If you are right, your employer brags about what a great safety researcher you are. If you are wrong, the employer never says anything bad about you and you don't mention you used to work for them.

@AbandonedAmerica I fully support more undersea billionaire cruises myself. Hope they all go.

@darwinwoodka

Great idea! Uber rich meet your death in a submersible called #Trumptanic

@AbandonedAmerica The more I learn about this whole operation, the more I want to root for the Orcas to overturn more yachts.
@greyduck @AbandonedAmerica To be fair: sailboats are the best boats. Slower speeds, no noise, no fossil fuels, no propellors to harm marine mammals.
@AbandonedAmerica Hey, total clowndom and ignoring blatant engineering and safety issues is the new hotness, per the World's Richest Man!
@AbandonedAmerica
I saw a segment on TV where they said they used GameBoy controllers to stear the subs. I kid you not. Not sure if they meant on this particular sub, but that is the impression I got.
@66gardeners @AbandonedAmerica gameboy controllers - that was the well engineered and tested bits

@AbandonedAmerica

It's a real puzzle.

I mean, those billionaires are a thousand times as smart as the rest of us and work a thousand times harder.

Isn't that why they "earn" so much?

@AbandonedAmerica This is similar to all the billionaire Space Tourists filling the sky with detritus.
@AbandonedAmerica the real irony here is that Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate, the same CEO named in the lawsuit who cut corners, is onboard the missing sub. Karma.
@AbandonedAmerica What global decadence & disrespect of life looks like:
2023: Billionaires pay ~$250,000 for a dive down to the Titanic grave in about 15,000 feet below ocean surface.
2001: Each Russian family, that lost a relative, when the Kursk submarine sank, killing all 118 crew members on board, was promised an apartment and 720,000 rubles -- more than $20,000 -- in compensation.
[At first Putin, as president-freshman of Russia tried to ignore the Kursk-disaster, but faced furious attacks from sailors' moms, so he performed a kind of emergency competence.]

Russia: Some Say 'Kursk' Death Payments Unfair (Part 2)

In the second and final part of her series on issues surrounding the sinking of the "Kursk" submarine, RFE/RL correspondent Francesca Mereu reports that Moscow -- stung by criticism that it reacted to the tragedy too slowly -- is now being questioned over its decision to pay out generous death...

@AbandonedAmerica No lessons at all will be learnt from this. After a certain amount of time another bright spark entrepreneur will be selling tickets for the double viewing of the Titanic and the famous submersible tragedy and the ghouls will line up.
@BetsyBeeee @AbandonedAmerica My thought too. It's now even more of a "tourist attraction".
@AbandonedAmerica Ah! But the Rich ARE Different and assume they are entitled to Nothing Going Wrong.

@AbandonedAmerica

Looks at dodgy looking adventure for older family members

Looks at value of inheritance

“Looks great, have a fantastic time!”

@AbandonedAmerica sadly it reminds me of the Challenger Shuttle disaster - engineers raise concerns about the O ring performance at low temperatures and the concerns were ignored. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Shuttle_Challenger_disaster
Space Shuttle Challenger disaster - Wikipedia

@AbandonedAmerica

I feel bad for the crew, but I don't give a damn about anyone who paid for the trip. Also, I'm sure most of their family are looking at this as a pay day, because they are going to inherit a lot.

@AbandonedAmerica I didn't become a billionaire wasting money on safety!
@AbandonedAmerica The damn thing is controlled by an old game controller! Did that not raise any red flags?!?!?!
@AbandonedAmerica rich does not equal smart.
@AbandonedAmerica The CEO (who is also onboard) was on record saying he is opposed to safety standards. https://www.newsweek.com/stockton-rush-was-issued-dire-warning-submersible-titanic-expedition-1807992
Stockton Rush Was Issued a Dire Warning on Submersible, Titanic Expedition

The OceanGate CEO was warned in 2018 that he was ignoring "a critical component in the safeguards that protect all submersible occupants."

@AbandonedAmerica
Darwin Awards are being polished for these rich cunts.
Meanwhile not even a small percentage of the money spent on searching for these entitled arsehats is poured into searching for drowning and drowned brown skinned people from Africa and the Subcontinent in the Mediterranean
@AbandonedAmerica @utbluegirl And the clown CEO is now sitting at the bottom of the ocean, probably replaying this case over and over in his head.
@AbandonedAmerica would you? Maybe this is your final solution to that family member? Harsh, but some people would pay real money to…I’m not saying that’s what’s happened here, at least I hope not. But the mindset exists.
@AbandonedAmerica not a ghoul! It’s very sad knowing this is playing out live before us, but… countless others die in more miserable situations every day that don’t have the class status to be featured in the glamorous news cycle we’re stuck with!
