Tomorrow - 21st June - is #ShowYourStripes day!

We encourage everyone to share their 'warming stripes' - simple visuals that represent observed changes in temperature - and start a climate conversation with friends, family, colleagues or anyone else!

These graphics can be used in many different ways to start those climate conversations and we would love to see examples of everyone using them.

You can download the warming stripes for your country, region or even city.

@ed_hawkins Should we be concerned?

@ed_hawkins is it possible to change the date range? Or are we free to alter the stripe image? Although the full range gives context, It's not all red over my lifetime. I thought it might be interesting.
@jonspark We can't change the date ranges but no problem with the graphics being adapted for particular uses.

@ed_hawkins
Da jeg var barn, frøs havet ved vores sommerhus på Sydfyn nogle gange til is, så vi kunne gå langt ud på vandet. Det kommer aldrig til at ske igen.

@ed_hawkins this is great. Is there any possibility to access them using an API where I send coordinates and receive the corresponding stripes as an image back?
@_holger Not yet, but I like the idea. Definitely feasible to pre-generate the ~65,000 stripes images required and store them where they could be accessed.
@ed_hawkins @_holger I'd be happy just to see the data. Maybe an app could do the image generation on the user's device.
@hosford42 @ed_hawkins yeah, that would be great as well.

I don't see the value in reminding myself about horrible things I can't do anything about.

I already

* don't plan to have children
* don't eat meat
* drive a small vehicle
* vowed to switch to an EV when it becomes possible for me

@beforewisdom Remind others.

@hosford42

Everyone already knows, wishes something could be done, doesn't care, or will always deny that it is happening.

Stressing people out without offering practical things to do doesn't accomplish anything except sell more big pharma for anxiety or depression.

@beforewisdom I grew up in a family of climate deniers. Hearing about it from others is what opened my eyes.

I'm sorry it stresses you out. Maybe you should add a content filter. But that doesn't mean it does no good for the rest of us to talk about it. And once we are properly motivated, we are far more likely to find practical things to do, as you already have.

@ed_hawkins Hoo boy, that is *not* a good picture.
@ed_hawkins #ShowYourStripes Baden-Württemberg 🇩🇪🥵🌡️🌎🔥

@ed_hawkins It might be useful to have a watermark (Maybe 2 lines: First line tells you place second line has: "source: ShowYourStripes.info")

I'd put it bottom left.

In case people are not clear on what this is.

@TNLNYC @ed_hawkins Yes, the source should definitely be there. It'll boost participation significantly.

@ed_hawkins

I study environmental science, and I tell everyone I know what's going on, but for me I find it useful to show the global average and then average of where we live to help highlight that while on a global average we have hit 1.5c some areas mainly in higher latitudes the rate of change is much higher.

@ed_hawkins I think we should show our stripes every day, to show each other that we care, and that we are not alone. Perhaps someone with the necessary skills could design a climate awareness ribbon that we can wear to express our solidarity with future generations?
@ed_hawkins any chance of helping me find New Zealand - I tried Australasia, then Pacific - not sure where we might be?

@ed_hawkins thank you - and I am not admitting what time I tried finding it earliertoday... it's now 6.20am...
@ed_hawkins
With my header I have #ShowYourStripes every day!
Thank you so much for developping those and for making them popular!
@ed_hawkins A dark holiday, to be sure, but a welcome one...

@ed_hawkins

These strike me as having the potential to induce a photic seizure, I'd like to suggest that they behind a sensitive media filter.

@ed_hawkins I want this on a t-shirt for everyone to see when I'm walking on the streets.

@ed_hawkins That's what I'm going to show to people when they say "of course it is hot now; it is summer"
