Somebody suggested that we should stop saying "instance" and start saying "pub"
The federation drama becomes all about if members of pub x can get in the door at pub y, or if they have to go out and join a different pub to get in
And the "don't let your local become a Nazi bar" story just slots right into the metaphor
the biggest problem I see with big servers is that their open admissions policy and huge unmoderated userbase makes them the equivalent of a mall TGI Fridays
they have to serve the same policy to the entire franchise, which gives local bartenders a much tougher time kicking out the "well-behaved" fash when they arrive
Genuinely local pubs can have an opinionated, pissed-off bartender who just says "get out" and reaches for the bat as soon as they clock a Nazi
Correspondingly, the "big pub"/TGI Fridays has to be extra-bland, because behavior that bothers any franchisee will get banned for all franchises
No extra-spicy breakfast tacos in Austin, no sushi rolls at the bar in Ballard, no punk shows on Tuesdays in Flint.
You might not like those things either — but if you like _one_ of them, you're better off finding the "pub" that matches _your_ idiosyncrasies
A federation of small pubs is healthy. Join the Rebellion
@ShadSterling @danilo @the_etrain oh i hear that for sure
So, this is a clear need from the Fediverse -- a guide to help you find your local with at few hops as possible
@ShadSterling @danilo @the_etrain
Oh, i think that "who you _can_ follow from here" is important, but as a fast follow after a basic sanity check based on a guide like #TheBadPlace
Any guide should be guiding new users _away_ from pubs that DON'T kick out the egregious fash
Gamer's taverns are a thing where I live. I switch between that and playing billiards.
@the_etrain The bar I go to seems to have a clash of clans league. Occasionally I just see three guys and the bartender playing clash of clans together at the bar.
Nice chill place.
It is however a bit depressing that the easiest place to go outside and socialise irl is the bar unfortunately.
