For the past several weeks, whenever I post any media, I always take the time to add ALT text to it. Although it may be a little time-consuming, I believe it is important to describe the media for those who are visually impaired or have accessibility concerns. Do you also add ALT text to your media for accessibility reasons? #mastodon
@nixCraft Yes, I've done it since I came here last October and read the pleas about it. It's good overall, but sometimes when I want to post in a hurry it's a bit of a pain.

I can sometimes see things others don't and vice versa. Alt text adds clarity to what's there.
@nixCraft that's a great thing to do
@nixCraft There is a great bot for this: https://botsin.space/@PleaseCaption/ It is that time when I love bots :)

i ws hoping this somehow analyzed your photos and came up with a caption for you. still cool, though!

@nixCraft I try to write meaningful alt texts, but then I finish the description with fluent nonsense and fake info, to try to poison scraped datasets for ML. Humans can easily tell when the description becomes nonsense, but this era of AI is bad at that.
@nixCraft I do try to caption my images, And now that i know i have a visually impaired friend following my account I'm checking for alt text before boosting things.
@nixCraft I don't generally expect anyone/many people to actually see my timeline posts, but yeah I always (try to) set alt text on images.
And thanks for the alt text, it helps a lot! @nixCraft

@nixCraft Yes.

Another plus is that for those of us with limited speeds, it's very helpful to read the description in our clients instead of loading an image that could be more than 2-3MB (and thus take *minutes* to actually show up)

@nixCraft Yes, but it feels a bit primitive. I'm sure an img2text algorithm will do better than me.

@nixCraft

Absolutely, to every post, even to replies in threads I don’t think many people will see.

An additional step to go to is not to boost any posts that have images with no alt text.

@nixCraft

Even though I don’t need alt text for accessibility reasons, it’s very useful as someone who uses a terminal-based client on a poor WiFi network: loading an image takes a good five seconds or more. If I don’t know what I’m getting into there’s no way I’m going to download the image.

@nixCraft when you have to also write the 1000 words that the picture is worth...
sometimes i do and sometimes i don't, pictures can be interpreted multiple ways too and it beats the purpose because the alt text will reflect my interpretation only. it's like music videos that make you interpret the music in only one way.

@nixCraft OFC!

Simply because I myself prefer it and oftentimes I've been stuck on #EDGElamd Internet and needed to disable images and other non-text content...

@nixCraft Yes I do all the time and I'm finding it is a FANTASTIC coda space to yammer on and have some extra fun sometimes too.
@nixCraft Yes, for the past several years.
