I deleted all my comments on Reddit earlier in the week. Reddit have undeleted them!
I'm not alone, others have seen this. https://www.reddit.com/r/RedditAlternatives/comments/14agh7d/reddit_starting_to_bring_back_deleted_comments/

Edit: It's possible that the deletion only worked on public posts, it seems?

Reddit starting to bring back deleted comments.

My deleted (by /r/PowerDeleteSuite) message history popped back up this morning on reddit. Looks like protests are hurting someone's feelings (and...

Ok, r/funny just went public, and one of my comments re-appeared in my profile. So I am confident that what's happening is the deletion of comments isn't happening on subreddits that are private (as r/funny was when I ran my delete script). As soon as the subreddit goes public, they "re-appear"
@popey I've yet to return. Is everything open again (shame if it is)?
@popey I want that "auto undelete" feature on Lemmy too now!
@popey GOD! I logged in to check, and they did it to my account as well! That’s a shitty move!
@popey Reddit is turning more and more evil every day, don't they?
@popey I've read that some users are having to edit each comment to delete all the contents for it to take effect upstream. I've already deleted my account so I can't confirm.
@popey what if you delete all your comments then close your account? Can they unclose your account?
@Brianrh I don't know, I haven't tested that
@popey @Brianrh Most likely won't work. From the User Agreement:
When Your Content is created with or submitted to the Services, you grant us a worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive, transferable, and sublicensable license to use, copy, modify, adapt, prepare derivative works of, distribute, store, perform, and display Your Content and any name, username, voice, or likeness provided in connection with Your Content

@popey

Perfect example of:
platform only cares about the money(content) but not the user.

@popey What happens if you edit your comments to gibberish? That's what I plan on doing.
@OrangeCorvus No idea, I didn't do that. Let us know how you get on!
@popey I used redact.dev to edit all my comments and to delete my posts. It worked super smooth, the only thing are the subs that were private and now are not anymore, those comments appeared now. Will run redact.dev again to edit the comments. I think it's way cooler to have something like "red musk far-flung important city lock ruthless stone square file -- mass edited with https://redact.dev/" than a deleted comment. It's a stronger message.

@OrangeCorvus Yeah, I have been periodically re-doing the deletion for the same reason as you.
@popey Is that not a clear GDPR violation?
@popey need an app that rather than deleting, edits to make the content worthless. Maybe jumble the words, or remove every second word.
@ottaross I used Power Delete Suite. It can already do that too.
@popey sounds versatile. Wonder if they're doing the work to figure out if the content is mangled vs erased, and replace in both conditions.

Attached: 2 images 👿 PSA: #Reddit is restoring deleted and overwritten posts to save what they consider "their data". This is a new low and probably illegal at least in Europe. You can send a GDPR or CPRA request here: https://www.reddit.com/settings/data-request These are screenshots of my profile on June 14th before and after overwriting and then deleting all my posts with Powerdelete. Today, June 16th all my posts have been restored by Reddit without my knowledge or consent. #redditblackout #redditmigration #kbin #lemmy

@chucker @popey Oh man, they must be running diffs on the content and returning it to previous state.

Hoping EU is all over them quickly for the GDPR violations.

@popey We've given our work to the platform, now they do what they want with it. It's a mess.
@popey I think that's why people are using a script to replace their posts and comments with random text.
@popey Reddit has become the Hotel California - you can check out any time you like but you can never leave.
@popey I went to delete all my comments and it would not let me log in :/
@popey I deleted every single one. They’re all back. Public posts.

@popey No doubt Reddit has versioned comments, and will probably do a hard reset of all edited/deleted comments to match the state just before the backlash begun, and do this before the IPO (and after commandeering the subreddits from the moderators currently protesting.)

The CEO is no stranger to editing user comments, but this is next level.

I wonder if the engineering team is having a hard time reconciling the CEO's directives with their own ethical stances & job security. What a shitshow.

@popey I'm guessing those users in the EU could force deletion under GDPR, let Reddit face the consequences of undeleting after that.
@popey Gee, that's a violation of the EU's GDPR. Hope Reddit is ready for the deep shit they're going to be in.
