The reddit strike appears to be continuing. I guess it's good news that /r/ruby keeps getting messages from people wanting to join, implying the community is still growing. Although, I find it slightly suspicious that some of these new users claim to be professional Rails devs with years of experience, but just now decided to join /r/ruby? Paranoid me kind of suspects this might be a tactic by Reddit mgmt to weaken the strike.
@postmodern I was one of those, because I was searching for something specific and Google took me there, but of course I couldn't read the discussion on what I was trying to figure out. :)

@postmodern maybe is paranoia, but there's a possibility of having enough "active" users #reddit would allow them to remove your on-strike moderator(s) and end the #redditstrike

Reddit plans to update its moderator removal policies to make it easier for users to vote out moderators. As expected, Reddit’s CEO makes clear they will make changes to hijack subreddits from striking moderators. This is going to get spicy. https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/reddit-protest-blackout-ceo-steve-huffman-moderators-rcna89544

@esparta many of the accounts who didn't identify themselves as Rubyists/Railsers were all 1 karma accounts, but who were created in 2020, which seemed odd. How do you manage to go three years without getting more than 1 karma? Seems like parked bot accounts.
@postmodern I was a lurker on tons of reddits that I am now trying to join. For ruby definitely could be more hobbyists and folks that never posted. I am now trying to join up on things like backyardorchards where I seasonally listened and learned how to care for my fruit trees.

@postmodern

As one of the mods of /r/rubyonrails (which is much smaller than /r/rails) I can definitely say we've seen the same activity. Tons of users requesting access to the the sub yet a large amount of the accounts are 1-2 years old with 1 karma. I can't really tell if its luckers or bot accounts.

@postmodern experienced Rails developer here that only heard about Reddit as a useful community because of this backlash.

I had always thought Reddit (as a whole) was some backwater of nastiness and pointless arguments. I’ve avoided it since its existence.

It was only in the last week I heard anything positive about it so you should definitely expect increased interest.

The Streisand Effect is real!
