What can y'all tell me about #Lemmy? Anyone recommended it? I'm about to bail out of #Reddit. I've used #RedditIsFun for a long time and I don't care to use Reddit's app. u/spez is turning out to be another Elon Musk, killing API access and being an overall asshat.
So far my only experience with the #Fediverse has been #Mastodon
@Woodchaz I hear #kbin , but I've yet to get there...
@Woodchaz mobile apps suck and federation between lemmy/kbin instances is spotty. But overall it looks promising.

@Woodchaz Lemmy looks like a barebones reddit and in my experience you get the basics: posts and threaded comments. Customization was unavailable the last time I saw, so no custom CSS or images.

The problem right now is that all the servers are at peak capacity.

It's basically a Titanic situation: The ship is sinking but there aren't enough boats.

Expect lag, errors connecting and slow-as-molasses page loads until the number of servers increases tenfold.

Yeah, it's chaos.

@yuki2501 @Woodchaz let's all just go back to phpBB.
@yuki2501
It was cooler back then wasn't it?
@yuki2501
Looks like a repeat of the Twitter refugee wave under Elon.
@Woodchaz (note: Generally it's best to avoid the term "refugee" here, actual refugees might get offended at the trivialization of the term)
@Woodchaz For desktop, Kbin has the best UX, but for mobile Jerboa. you may want to make an account on lemmy.world or another instance closer to home if you want. Follow all the interesting communities you find at browse.feddit.de
@CodingAndCoffee
How do you feel about the vibe there? Reddit is still full of edgy guys. I'm used to that. But I don't have any appetite for the way it was before certain right wing subs got banned.
@Woodchaz The conservatives are largely choosing to *stay* on Reddit. People leaving to Lemmy and Tildes and such definitely seem to lean more progressive.
@CodingAndCoffee
I don't know if conservative fits these days. Conservative I could handle. I was one once. Where did the middle run off to?
@Woodchaz That's a great question. I think this whole event is pretty polarizing overall. Centrists who are A. mad about Reddit's actions but B. don't care about federation as the solution are going to Discord, Tildes, or Squabbles.
@CodingAndCoffee
I probably should look into those. Not that I'm a centrist. I'm left of liberal, but it can feel like preaching to the choir sometimes. One thing I need to do is quit putting off learning Discord.

@Woodchaz I use Discord for certain chat servers, but the biggest problem IMO is that it's not discoverable and a poor replacement for link aggregators. https://lemmy.world and https://kbin.social are much closer to what Reddit was in the early days.

If you're left of liberal you'll fit right in.

Lemmy.World - A generic Lemmy server for everyone to use.
