So, what's going on with all this #RedditMigration #Lemmy #kbin stuff?

Short version. Reddit is a mess. Users are fleeing to the #Fediverse.

There are two Fedi #Reddit alternatives you can join, Lemmy and kbin.

kbin: https://fedia.io/register (also https://kbin.social/register but now slammed)
Lemmy: https://infosec.pub/signup

New migrants please be patient. This is a lot like Nov 2022. It will be choppy, but get sorted out. This is another golden opportunity to break down corporate social media.

#Lemmy and #kbin are part of the Fediverse and you can see their content on Mastodon, but you currently get more functionality by creating a kbin or Lemmy account account:

kbin: https://fedia.io/register (also https://kbin.social/register but now slammed)
Lemmy: https://infosec.pub/signup

Right now there are not many instances for either, but that does not mean the Fediverse can not handle a surge. Yesterday Mastodon's infosec.exchange spun up fedia.io (kbin) and infosec.pub (Lemmy) .

There is every reason to suspect that other established Mastodon instances will jump into the breach to help with #RedditMigration .

We are going to see chaotic and exciting days ahead as the Fediverse once again adds capacity, new users build out content, and developers make rapid fire improvements to their applications. But this is what we do best.

Be patient. You are part of the existential shift from corporate domination to people powered social media.

We got this.

Just learned about lemmy.world https://lemmy.world/signup, from the mastodon.world folks.

Edit:
-Do not know about resourcing, but @smorks lemmy.ca https://lemmy.ca/signup has been mentioned
-You can also check out https://join-lemmy.org/ for more Lemmy instances

If you know of any other open well resourced Lemmy or kbin instances please reply to this post, and will list them here.

Lemmy

New users should be aware that there have been concerns raised about the #Lemmy developers and the developers' main instances.

Others point out that, in the #Fediverse, instance moderation is up to the instance operator and that the technology itself is agnostic. Indeed, there are Mastodon instances that are pretty vile, and defederation is always an option here.

In any case, you should be aware of these issues concerning Lemmy.

@mastodonmigration I heard about this, it has me hoping someone might fork it so we have a codebase that know contributing to won't automatically benefit standard lemmy

@mastodonmigration

Yeah that is some throwing the baby out with the bath water pattern of thought.

If Lemmy can be valuable to the Fediverse community then it doesn’t matter one bit whether the developers are good people or bad people or smelly or have their in bad intentions.

This isn’t like magic. The software will do what it is programmed to do regardless of the mindsets and motivations of the developers.

@volkris Not disagreeing with you, or taking a position one way or the other. The purpose of this post was simply to make people aware of the issue.

@mastodonmigration

I wrote a description of what these things are and why anyone cares to explain to the rest of fedi what's going on.

@mastodonmigration don't let Perfect be the enemy of Good. If you think the Lemmy devs are suspicious, you should check out who funds the rest of the big internet media companies.
@wizdum The purpose of this post is to flag the issue, not to take a position on either side of this matter.

@mastodonmigration With the original lemmy devs being hard pro-China regime, and removing anti-China government posts and comments (on lemmy.ml and lemmygrad), be sure you look into who is running any Lemmy instance before you decide to join. I may wait until it's been forked by people without such an agenda. I'm also looking at kbin.

Staying at Reddit any longer isn't even a decision for me know; I've been active from back when it started, but now that's it's being musked I'll be out soon.

@W6KME Thank you. That is helpful. Have the lemmy devs done anything to address these concerns?
@mastodonmigration I don't know more than what I have read in various reddit fora (the ones that haven't been removed for advocating lemmy lol). There have been past efforts hardcode blockword lists etc, that later were made optional. It looks like nothing bad has successfully been embedded, but the efforts were there. I'd be happier if the devs left the politics to instance admins.
@W6KME Agreed. Helpful. It will be interesting to see how this concern is addressed.
@mastodonmigration @W6KME Promote Kbin not lemmy please with all this pro CCCP stuff going on lemmy
@W6KME @mastodonmigration With infosec and .world adopting Lemmy, I would expect that anything detrimental going into the code would lead to a sustainable fork.
