There's a Fediverse alternative to #Reddit called #Kbin. More info at https://kbin.pub

Still VERY new, not many servers yet, two so far in English:

https://fedia.io
https://kbin.social

No app yet, use it through these sites. Subreddits are called "Magazines". You can interact with magazines from other servers.

Coders help Kbin at https://codeberg.org/Kbin/kbin-core, non-coders donate at https://www.buymeacoffee.com/kbin

(Sorry to people bored of this, had many requests to put info in one place)

Home | kbin.pub - Fediverse of content

p.s. Kbin is part of the Fediverse. You can follow Kbin accounts and magazines from Mastodon etc, and follow Mastodon etc accounts from Kbin.

However, the cross-platform federation doesn't seem to be working properly yet (bear in mind the project is only a few months old!).

There's also a complication about the Kbin.social server being overwhelmed over the last few days. Kbin.social has had to use Cloudflare to cope with the overwhelming load, which is known to mess up federation.

@feditips how would that work from this end? Can I see the magazines from mastodon? Or would I have to use something like Lemmy/their web app?
@figaro Based on my tests, you have to follow a “magazine” to see the content being posted there.

However, based on my test, a reply made a Kbin account to a Kbin “Thread” currently doesn't federate. It is probably a bug, or the software currently disabled it because they need to improve it. (see:
https://c.im/@youronlyone/110528686804356505 )

Probably a #Kbin #bug, probably not. What I did: 1. Created a new Kbin “Thread” in a #Guppe group (or Kbin “Magazine”) The new Kbin Thread was received by Guppe and pushed to its members. 2. Using a Kbin account, I replied to that Kbin Thread. The reply was not seen by Guppe and thus no post/reply was pushed. 3. Using a non-Kbin account, I replied to that Kbin Thread. Kbin itself received the reply and displays it as a Thread comment. 4. Using a Kbin account, I replied to the non-Kbin reply (see #3). Guppe received it and the reply was pushed to Guppe members. --- So… it seems that a Kbin account replying to a Kbin Thread is not being received by Guppe (or Kbin is not pushing it). Note: I have not tested if the Kbin “Magazine” is not from another instance. The steps would be slightly different as the non-Kbin account first have to subscribe/follo that “Magazine“. Here is the test thread: https://fedia.io/m/[email protected]/t/969/Testing-how-posting-a-Kbin-thread-works The “Ooh, I'm starting to” and “So, this is probably a” replies were from my Kbin account and were not seen by Guppe (thus can only be seen from Kbin itself). Filed as a bug report: https://codeberg.org/Kbin/kbin-core/issues/90

@figaro Either way, the software is still new and under heavy development. It will get better. I guess they had to release it early because of everything that's happening with Reddit. Redditors are looking for a place to migrate to. ^_^

I think another way of explaining it is that each “magazine” is a “group” the way a “group” is with
#Chirp (chirp.social) and #Guppe (a.gup.pe) groups.

You follow the “magazine”/“group” to be able to see content being shared or posted there. Then you can reply to it as if you are replying to a regular user.

On Kbin's side, it pushes the content/replies it receives to everyone who is subscribed/following the “magazine”.

@feditips
@youronlyone @feditips @figaro there was so much traffic the maintainer enabled cloudflare bot/DDoS protection, and that is disrupting federation. He's working on it. 😁
@baronvonj Hmm… if you were replying to me, re: the tests I did… I used fedia.io not kbin.social ^_^

@feditips @figaro

@figaro

If you follow @[email protected] you would see the Scifi magazine on the server kbin.social.

It would appear to you in Mastodon as a group with lots of posts in it. See the screenshot below.

However, I'm not sure this cross-platform federation is working properly at the moment.

@feditips ah ok. That is super cool.

One of these days someone could build a super fediverse app that can do both 😅

@figaro @feditips
still i use lemmy but very glad to see this!!  thank you for share!!

@feditips

So that's why I cannot seem to follow magazines from here just yet? (There are no search results coming up when looking up the handle.)

@illumniscate

I'm not sure, the situation is still really unclear while the project is so new.

The main reason it's getting so much attention now is Reddit imploding, I don't think the lead developer expected to suddenly have to do all this at once!

@illumniscate

You can try other Kbin instances, to test it out. For kbin.social (the flagship server), yes, it's currently being bombarded so they had to enable CF. Unfortunately, unless you upgrade to a CF Pro account, you won't be able to set it up to make it friendly to the
#fediverse requests (actually not even to IndieWeb Webmention requests, as I've experienced last year).

@feditips
Try this Test Magazine

@[email protected]

You can also check my user profile:
@[email protected] You should be able to follow both.

@illumniscate @feditips

@youronlyone @feditips @[email protected]

Yeah, other instances work without issue, it's just Kbin. @icg937 explained the reason behind it in a parallel reply thread. Hopefully, it will be possible to follow once the dust settles. Thanks anyway! 🙂

@feditips Cloudflare?

Oh dear...

Sending out prayers. 🙏🏿

@queenslight

To be fair, there was so much load they assumed it was a DDOS.

They didn't use cloudflare before that.

@feditips Ah, understood.

Hmmm… Hopefully the sailing goes smooth for them.

I haven’t signed up over there yet, confused how that one works. Interface not too bad for screen reader users however.

@queenslight

I used it for about a day and loved it so far. Someone said the creator got $300 in donations over the weekend and he was thrilled. I really hope it works out!

@feditips @queenslight how/why does cloudflare mess up federation?
Is it the default cache settings messing up API endpoints? (you need to add a custom rule for its base path)
@feditips What's the difference between Kbin and Lemmy?

@feditips

I can’t wait for things to smooth out in the next few months, Kbin loooa great and being able to see that from Mastodon is amazing

@feditips Damn, it's written in PHP? No wonder the site is so slow.
@feditips I'm joining the "get bent reddit" movement but it's definitely a learning curve. I've never heard of the fediverse before this and I'm definitely lost but willing to learn.

@kelce @feditips

Mastodon has already replaced birdsite and book of faces for me so I am eager to get my HFY and other reddit fixes here too.

@mstrmustache @feditips I'm liking it so for. Like reddit without the toxicity haha.
@kelce @mstrmustache @feditips The one thing I miss about Twitter is the random posts. I'd get a fair number of left-field posts that were actual interesting. Lots of toxic, too, of course Maybe I'm doing Mastodon wrong, though.

@Secret_Squirrel @kelce @mstrmustache

If you want truly random posts, try browsing the Local and Federated timelines on your server.

They are feeds of all the public posts made by people on your server (Local) or people from other servers that your server has noticed (Federated), in chronological order.

More info at https://fedi.tips/what-are-the-local-federated-home-timelines-how-do-i-stop-them-scrolling-too-quickly/

Also, try Explore which shows trending posts and trending tags. (On the official app, click the magnifying glass but leave the search box blank.)

What are the Local, Federated and Home timelines? How do I stop them scrolling too quickly? | Fedi.Tips – An Unofficial Guide to Mastodon and the Fediverse

An unofficial guide to using Mastodon and the Fediverse

@Secret_Squirrel @kelce @mstrmustache

Having said that, if you're on a massive server like mastodon.social those feeds will be really, really random firehoses.

If you join a smaller server you'll see more of a theme, especially on the Local feed.

@feditips @Secret_Squirrel @kelce @mstrmustache and if you’re on a single user instance you’ll see nothing but your own feed again
@feditips @kelce @mstrmustache It would never have occurred to me to search but leave the field blank. Thank you! Sometimes the truly random stuff is neat and you find great accounts to follow. Still learning the system around here and appreciate all the tips you post.
@Secret_Squirrel @kelce @feditips
You still get that by following a wide variety of accounts and seeing what they boost.

@kelce

@feditips

Welcome! Follow whoever you'd like, explore as many tags as you'd like, and remember to use Content Warnings on sensitive topics and to write alt text for any images, videos, or audio clips you might upload.

@ina @feditips Thank you for the welcome and the pointers!
@feditips the federation works, you just have to follow the “profile” and it’ll boost new posts into your timeline
@feditips Is it possible to use my mastodon account to comment and follow or subscribe on kbin. So that I don't have to make an account on kbin.

@M3thAster

Yes, you can do this from within Mastodon, but at the moment the current Kbin servers are so totally overwhelmed that this may not work.

Every person and group on the Fediverse has an account address which you can copy and paste into the search box in order to follow and interact with it. There's more info here:

https://fedi.tips/whats-my-accounts-address-how-do-i-follow-other-peoples-addresses-how-can-people-follow-my-address/

I've attached a screenshot of what happens when I paste a Kbin address into Mastodon.

@feditips @M3thAster is there a proper kbin installation? the original one is pain in the asssss
@feditips kbin.pub «500 Internal Server Error» (:

@MrClon

Try it again in a bit? I think they are getting way more visitors than usual due to the Reddit silence!

@feditips What is peoples' oppinion about Lemmy? Both seem to be viable alternatives right now, not sure about cross plattform federation between the two though.

@matzkopf

If you support tankies that celebrate Stalins birthday, sure

@feditips

@selea @feditips No idea what you're talking about. Care to elaborate?

@matzkopf

The developers of lemmy is hard-core tankies, basically.

Mastodon 🐘

@matzkopf @feditips I've seen both of them are interoperable.

Just choose which layout you like :) Both have uniqueness of their own.

I think Lemmy is currently more matured, but try both it and Kbin, @matzkopf, and decide for thyself. @feditips doesn’t seem to enjoy that the former’s developers are communists, but the point of free software and interoperable services is for that to not matter. I mean, William Shockley was a big 🏇 but that shouldn’t stop us from using transistors.
William Shockley - Wikipedia

@cnx @matzkopf

My objections to Lemmy are nothing to do with communism or politics or anything like that.

My objection to them is their attitude to human rights. Human rights are why I joined the Fediverse and why I run my accounts and sites to help more people onto the Fediverse.

If someone is doing something against human rights, that is a huge red flag for me.

It's not about the code, it's about giving people in charge of the code influence and power.

Point taken, @feditips, but also Lemmy the software does not violate human rights AFAICT? Cc: @matzkopf

@cnx @matzkopf

Using a FOSS project and encouraging its use provides the project leaders more funding, more power, more visibility.

Eugen was interviewed on CNN etc because so many people use Mastodon.

It would be disturbing to see Lemmy devs being given this level of influence.

@feditips, that’s a stand I don’t agree with, yet a valid one. I’d rather people don’t politically idolize projects’ heads though, I am well aware that we humen are not highly rational beings. I wonder how large of an influence can be, ref. Bill Shockley.

Nothing wrong with funding useful technology however. Cc: @matzkopf

@cnx @matzkopf

Thanks for the thoughtful replies.

Perhaps on this issue we will agree to disagree, but I appreciate the dialogue. Apologies for my caps on the earlier post, I'll edit it.

@feditips @[email protected] @matzkopf I think I missed an episode. What did the guys at Lemmy did or said against human rights?

@feditips is there somewhere I can read about what motivated kbin as a separate project to Lemmy?
