(1/5) I had moved to the south coast and was (briefly…) experiencing married bliss. And for the first time since I was 18, I had no car of my own, having married into a half-share of a #Renault5. It was a nice example of an early Euro hatchback: comfortable, economical, easy to live with. Unfortunately, my wife had a bit of a collision with another car and revealed rather more rust than the insurance company was prepared to repair.

(2/5) Kids, don’t buy a car as a distress purchase from someone you vaguely know. I did.

A customer was selling an #Alfasud for £500 and it seemed like a decent buy: unusually rust-free, fast enough, and an Alfa for goodness’ sake. I bought it.

Rightly acclaimed for its handling and balance, the ’Sud was a joy to drive, and I enjoyed driving it a lot. When it ran, it was a glorious thing. When it ran.
