I just realized there are several people who I follow whose posts haven’t been showing up on Ivory even though I know they’re actively posting.

I know this problem is Ivory-specific because I can see them just fine on other apps.

Two of those people are @Talia_christine and @donmelton

One thing I just noticed is that both are on mstdn.social, so I’m wondering if that has anything to do with it?

@ivory, I understand why you wouldn’t pre-load posts from a newly-loaded profile on a different server, but I should at least be able to see them once I’m following them, right? Is there a setting or something else I’m missing here? I feel like I’m missing out on a lot of good stuff and interesting people due to lack of visibility.

@Alice @donmelton maybe we boost too much stuff and ivory is like nah.😂

@Talia_christine @donmelton

🤣 But I rely on seeing your boosts! Between you and Don, it’s like a curated timeline of all of the good stuff in the Fediverse.

@Talia_christine @Alice @donmelton
Not gonna lie. This is right where my mind went.
@the_etrain @Alice @donmelton I mean it's definitely true.😂😂
@Alice Not sure what's different about my setup, but I see posts from @Talia_christine and @donmelton on Ivory all the time. (I switched to Ivory a couple weeks ago and really like it.)

@bwbeach @Talia_christine @donmelton

Weird. Hopefully it’s just a setting or at least something that can be fixed.

This is what their profiles look like to me:

@Alice @Talia_christine Yikes! Sorry that you're having this problem. TC and I don't want you to miss out on any of our boosty goodness. Or our regular posts either!

I'm looking through this thread now and unfortunately I have nothing useful to add in terms of fixes or even theories as to why it's happening. 😬🤷‍♀️

Does it happen when you use another client instead of @ivory? For example, the Web browser UI?

@donmelton @Talia_christine @ivory

I can see your posts in other apps and in my web browser, so that’s how I know it’s related to Ivory, but @bwbeach said they use Ivory and can see your posts, so I’m not sure.

@Bam mentioned a setting in Ivory to only show the first time something is boosted, which I do have enabled, but that doesn’t explain why I can’t even see your own posts.

I’m hoping it’s just a setting in Ivory, but I’ve checked to ensure you’re not muted and boosts are enabled, so I’m not sure what else could be causing this.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that @ivory can steer me in the right direction; otherwise, I’ll probably just go back to using the web browser, but I only view Mastodon from my phone so I’m not looking forward to that.

@Alice @Talia_christine @ivory @bwbeach @Bam Wow! Now I understand. That really *is* weird then. 🤔

Yeah, I hope the Ivory folks respond. @paul, are you hearing this?

It probably comes as no surprise to anyone, but I usually use a Web browser to access Mastodon. I even use the Advanced Web UI on my iPhone. 🤷‍♀️

But I'm a major league nerd so I don't recommend that for everyone. 🤓

@donmelton @Alice @Talia_christine I feel totally vindicated for using my browser on my phone instead of an app. 😂
@donmelton @Alice @Talia_christine @ivory @bwbeach @Bam @paul “Don Melton’s Mastodon client is Safari” may be the most on-brand thing I’ve ever seen on this service.
@donmelton @Alice @Talia_christine @ivory @bwbeach @Bam @paul I had major issues using both the Mastodon app and Ivory. I’ve switched to @IceCubesApp and the experience is great now.
@Alice @donmelton @Talia_christine @ivory @bwbeach @Bam I believe Ivory can do its own app-based filtering, distinct from anything set on the web that other apps may be honouring - have you checked for anything unexpected being set under this tab?

@dmcgk @donmelton @Talia_christine @ivory @bwbeach @Bam

Ah, good thought, but I don’t have anything set up there.

I did turn off the option to hide duplicate boosts just in case that was causing trouble. I found it interesting because Don’s pinned post appeared, but nothing else. So strange.

Sorry for dragging everyone into this and for the ridiculous amount of notifications you’re receiving, but I’d like to stick with ivory as long as I can see the posts I care about.

Please let me know if you’d like to be moved to BCC the next time around!

@Alice @donmelton @Talia_christine @ivory @bwbeach @Bam Oh that’s interesting - I actually see exactly the same thing as you for Don in Ivory, one pinned post only, but Mona displays everything…
@Alice @donmelton @Talia_christine @ivory @bwbeach @Bam I wonder if it’s just because Ivory separates out boosts and posts in the user’s profile to different tabs; Don’s prolific boosting maybe means his direct posts drop out of eg. a set number of fetched posts that they grab for that display, whereas in Mona they just get fetched opportunistically when I scroll down far enough in the feed?

@dmcgk @donmelton @Talia_christine @ivory @bwbeach @Bam

It’s possible, but that doesn’t help me to be able to see the posts which seems like a very basic request for app functionality.

I can’t even tell you the amount of times I’ve gone to a profile to see what a user posts only to find nothing even though I know they’re posting.

I know you can click on the link to view the profile in the browser, but I don’t have time to do that every time someone follows and I’m trying to quickly see if I want to follow back.

I also understand that the content is on different servers and it would take a lot to pre-load all posts from everyone, but at least provide a preview with about five of their most recent posts and especially display everything after I’ve chosen to follow that person.

I really don’t think I’m asking for that much? Especially for an app that I’m paying for, and especially on a subscription basis.

I’m still holding out hope that this is just a setting issue or bug that has a legitimate solution.

@Alice @dmcgk @donmelton @Talia_christine @ivory @bwbeach @Bam

This here Fediverse River is a strange one, eddys and weird currents, Toots float by but sometimes sink, never to be seen again. So many toots.

Seriously, I've assumed your posting volume has been pretty much the same all along, but somehow visibility does change a lot. I initially assumed it was just timing but no.

I have no relevant tech to add, this is all near magick to me.

@Alice This doesn’t help your Ivory problem, but Mona does provide a button to reload the same profile, in the app without jumping to a browser, from the owner’s original server so that it appears to us as it does to them. Definitely a feature I hope other apps borrow…

@dmcgk This is actually very helpful!

I just downloaded Mona and I’m already seeing a lot of features that I like, especially how notifications are bundled by post. I find myself ignoring notifications in Ivory because it’s overwhelming how they’re all displayed individually and I feel like I’d just be scrolling for days.

I also like the Divide View. It’s neat to be able to look at one post and refer to another in the same screen.

But most importantly, I can see all of the posts by @Talia_christine and @donmelton!

I’m going to play around a little bit more to see if it’s worth the cost. I’m guessing it will be, but I already paid for Ivory and I’m hoping they’ll check in with an easy solution.

If not, Mona looks really promising and at least it’s not a subscription fee and is instead only a one-time fee which seems reasonable for the features and functionality.

Thank you for the recommendation!

@Alice Glad it might be of us! It’s also _by far_ the most customisable client out there that I’ve tried, if you have Strong Opinions on how your feeds should look 😆

@dmcgk @Talia_christine @donmelton

Ooh! I just found an additional Mona feature which is incredible!

At the bottom of the post, it gives a preview of anyone tagged AND it has an icon showing following/follower status.

This is huge, especially considering how many people I may not have followed back due to not being able to see their posts in Ivory and/or people I’ve just assumed I was already following since we interact on here all of the time, but accidentally missed.

I am totally sold on Mona. Thanks again!

@Alice I love that icon!

@dmcgk I actually asked for that feature over five months ago, so I’m just going to take full credit for it 😂

@[email protected] @RickiTarr @[email protected] @[email protected] I imagine some people are similar to me where I don’t even realize I’m not already following the person because I’m just going through the timeline and favoriting what I like and boosting what I really like. Constructive feedback to Mastodon and associated apps would be to add some sort of indicator near the name/profile photo on a toot within a timeline that shows if you follow them (similar to the icons that are displayed when you go into the mastodon web settings and actually look at your follower/following list and can see if you follow them, they follow you, and if it’s mutual). Maybe even a button to follow/unfollow from the post within the timeline?

@dmcgk @Alice @donmelton @Talia_christine @ivory @bwbeach @Bam FWIW, I see "No Posts Found" for both Don's Posts and Boosts.

@Alice @donmelton @Talia_christine @ivory @bwbeach @Bam

I can verify that I do not see the posts from @donmelton on Ivory, but I do see his stuff when I use a browser with my Mastodon instance (Indieweb.social). On Ivory, even if I specifically go to Don's profile, it says “No Posts Found”. But interestingly, I do see his response in this thread. Hmmmm.

@dariusdunlap @ivory @bwbeach @Bam

Check out @MonaApp! I just downloaded it at the recommendation of @dmcgk and I can see all of the posts and the app seems to have a lot of great features.

It’s funny how I was a die hard Ivory fan girl up until this morning when I realized I wasn’t seeing posts by @Talia_christine and @donmelton, at which point I was ready to jump ship. Luckily, this new ship appears to be very nice!

@dariusdunlap @Alice @Talia_christine @ivory @bwbeach @Bam OK, that seems wrong. 🤔

@paul Can you look into this? (Best to read this whole thread from the beginning.) Thanks!

@donmelton @Alice @Talia_christine @ivory @bwbeach @Bam @paul let me know if there’s anything I can do to support the diagnosis of this strange problem. It’s consistent here on my M1 MBA.

@Alice @Talia_christine @donmelton I am experiencing the same phenomenon with a different app, different people, and different servers.

I couldn't begin to tell you what the discerning characteristics are, but it has been frustrating me because it reduces the variety of my feed.
