This is an historic day: Jack Smith has taken the first steps on a path that will put a former US president in jail. I vividly remember the Watergate hearings when I was in college. It’s important that the whole country see justice being served. Trust in the rule of law is the glue that holds our Republic together.
@leo chances of a conviction feels high. Chances of a prison sentence feels low.

@jaykass @leo Can't you just hear a president saying "For the good of the country we must move on..." as they announce a pardon or commutation?

I expect Trump to go into exile. Jared owes him at least a place to hide.

@leo I really hope you’re right. So much has changed since Watergate in the way that people consume their “news.”
@leo nobody will throw a bigger party than me if trump goes to prison. I have absolutely no faith that will ever happen though.
@leo more like Mar-a-Lago house arrest, then he dies from a Big Mac heart attack

@leo

Nixon never served a day of prison time. I trust that we won't make that mistake again.

@leo from your keyboard to god's feed.

It feels like a necessary step for the US also b/c it's no longer really tenable to view SCOTUS as anything other than a collection of politicians in robes. The legal-geniuses-just-calling-balls-and-strikes view doesn't really pass the straight-face test anymore unfortunately.

At least the criminal law is only ridiculously slow and inefficient, not altogether broken where the overprivileged are concerned.

@leo

Yes.
And, maybe it would be a next step along the path towards a future where
- no one is above the law (not even the wealthy, the influential, and the corporate persons)
- the law is not a mechanism for producing structural inequality
- the law is fairly and justly applied to all, rather than applied in ways that reveal racial, socio-economic, and other forms of discrimination

Trust in that sort of rule of law might produce a far better Republic.

@leo I remember it as it was happening and thinking how terrible it was. But this was so much more awful. Back then I don't remember there being factions that would follow Nixon through thick and thin. I think people were just happy to get rid of him.
@leo I fear the sleazy donald with jump bail.
@leo guess I’m unfollowing you too. I didn’t realize you’d be posting biased political content.
