i don't want $3500 vr headsets to pretend to go places or $50000 cars to run minor errands. i want reliable public transit and to be able to walk around a city without dealing with random injuries from people doing the first two things
@h_thoreson
How about the ability to feel safe running errands on a bicycle?
@BikeCurmudgeon that's like another level of ultra premium society that might have to wait for another lifetime
@h_thoreson @BikeCurmudgeon
The Society Air Pro. 😅
@forpeterssake @h_thoreson
I was hit once, intentionally but a van with their external RV mirror. Had a go pro. Video showed the license plate. Police stopped answering my calls. Did nothing.
@BikeCurmudgeon @h_thoreson Absolutely infuriating.
@forpeterssake @BikeCurmudgeon sadly that doesn't surprise me- I go running most days and routinely will count 5-6 cars that blatantly run red lights straight into crosswalks and nobody does anything about it. It's not close either these are people that just decide stopping is not for them and plow straight into where people want to walk going highway speed
@h_thoreson @forpeterssake
Agreed.
When I didn't cycle commute I rode public transportation. The number of cars that blew through red lights is appaling. Also the number of drivers reading their phones while driving in traffic drove me nuts. I had to stop looking out the window.
@forpeterssake @BikeCurmudgeon just since i posted this a few hours ago i was almost mowed over by somebody in a giant bmw suv that made an erratic left turn again straight into a crosswalk where i had the walk symbol and several other people were also walking. they just didn't care bc brand new expensive vehicle and SCREENZ
@h_thoreson @forpeterssake
I'm am sorry this occurred, glad you're not injured
@BikeCurmudgeon @forpeterssake thanks, luckily I was just paying attention and not staring at my phone or something but it was closer than I would have liked.
@h_thoreson @forpeterssake @BikeCurmudgeon private ownership of gas and electric vehicles should be illegal
@h_thoreson I would add a third item: A moron wearing a $3,500 VR headset while driving a $50,000 car. 🙃
@bater @h_thoreson I never considered that at some point, someone is going to be arrested for driving with one of those headsets on. I give the over/under for that at no longer than a month from the release date...

@jayreding @h_thoreson I agree just like texting while driving or talking on a phone while driving, it will happen at some point.

And at some point, somebody with VR headsets will wind up parking their car in somebody else's living room.

And the excuse of the driver will be, "I didn't see the house." 🙄

@h_thoreson Sounds like Europe.
@LMNOChris @h_thoreson don't fret, us Europeans are working hard to become the next US
@stooovie @h_thoreson Buddy, I don't even want to be the current US.
@h_thoreson
Usually expensive electronics depreciate rapidly and can be found in thrift stores for next to nothing.
@oldredsubby
@h_thoreson Also, I'll take bicycle and motorbike-friendly locales. Honestly for the family and small business owner, the Honda Cub and successors is the most popular motor vehicle ever. It really is a family vehicle (and the only one we own, as a family of 4, is a 2005 Honda Wave 125i). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_Super_Cub and successor Honda Wave https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_Wave_series

@h_thoreson It is almost like social media companies have decided that we should never leave our houses. Are we turning into an indoor civilization?
@h_thoreson it’s not either/or. I’m an avid cyclist, but I live in a city where cars rule the transit culture. We try to ride as safely as possible, but we know where we are how to manage the risk. The existence of VR / augmented reality won’t change any of that. And cars aren’t going anywhere. Change is slow and difficult.
@h_thoreson We need to enhance real reality instead of virtual reality
@h_thoreson, but we don't want public transport done by people who are responsible for these headsets and cars.
@h_thoreson apple’s headset and good policy/planning are not mutually exclusive & comparing them as such is ableist & frankly comes off as bitter. Also, what the fuck does a “$50000” car have anything to do with the other two?

@h_thoreson Just repeating this here - because that would make the whole world for everyone so much better:

(I) want reliable public transit and to be able to walk around a city without dealing with random injuries from people...

@h_thoreson

i'm happy with a $30 bootleg of the marvel movies
