“To recommend thrift to the poor is both grotesque and insulting. It is like advising a man who is starving to eat less.”
― Oscar Wilde

#CompostTheRich #EatTheRich

@BadgerBadgerBadger
To save money, maybe you should not subscribe to the Wall Street Journal.
@BadgerBadgerBadger 😤😡🤬

These arguments always make my blood boil!

Reagan & Thatcher's demonization of the poor is firmly entrenched!

So sick of being told that (as a poor public school teacher), that the poor are lazy, unmotivated and trying to scam the government!

How about spreading those record corporate profits around, like maybe let them "trickle down" to those who need it most?

But no, we must be lazy. And should manage our money better. And get a 2nd or 3rd job!
🙄

@BadgerBadgerBadger The sad part about the article is people will probably believe it. And to some extent some productivity guru could peddle this idea.

As if fasting is some "productivity hack" that can help you achieve mental clarity.

@ericsburdon @BadgerBadgerBadger did you read the article?
@fial Not fully since you have to be a member of WSJ to read the full thing. My post was more focusing on the headline that was provided.
@ericsburdon yeah it was clear from your reply that you did a Reddit
@BadgerBadgerBadger so once I skip breakfast and still can't afford a house should I skip another meal in hopes that I'll magically be able to one day have one and maybe even retire?

@BadgerBadgerBadger @stonebear it makes me so mad to see bullshit like this.

It’s also incredible to see eggs portrayed as a luxury. Societal changes (driven by the wealthy and large corporations) have helped people become so far removed from their food that they have to rely on massive greedy corporations for their food.

They’ve had little choice. The very people who have removed the ability of many to grow their own food, or have chickens, or buy their food from local community markets, are now being told to skip food.

It’s fucking disgusting.

@Aminorjourney @BadgerBadgerBadger never mind that the whole egg price spike was industry generated fear, uncertainty, and doubt... Just like gas price spikes...

@stonebear @BadgerBadgerBadger yah.

I need to sit down and figure out how much it costs to keep my chickens.

I know each bag of feed is about $75 but honestly, there are cheaper alternatives and my mother said when she was young they boiled up veg scraps and fed that to the chickens alongside oatmeal.

I get 4-5 eggs per day.

@Aminorjourney @stonebear @BadgerBadgerBadger My father-in-law mostly feeds his chickens from kitchen scraps, plants from his garden, and certain weeds that are good for them.
@BadgerBadgerBadger as opposed to "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day" (which probably isn't "true" either, but still ...)
@BadgerBadgerBadger Infuriating. "Let them eat cake" was less tone-deaf than this.
@BadgerBadgerBadger how does anybody begin writing this and not realise how horrible this is???
why not just kill yourself, such savings! 🇨🇦
@BadgerBadgerBadger
@BadgerBadgerBadger
I prefer #CompostTheRich but lets leave all options on the table.
@BadgerBadgerBadger "If the poor would simply skip meals every now and then, maybe they wouldn't be so poor. Now, if you'll excuse me, my butler's late with my midday caviar. If he doesn't get it to me precisely at 2:45, then it is worthless and the entire container of $400 an ounce caviar might as well be thrown out!"

@BadgerBadgerBadger Eat the rich for your breakfast they told you to skip.

I just... wow, WTF.

@BadgerBadgerBadger This is an unfortunate headline for an article that is just about how the price of many breakfast staples specifically have increased, more than other foods.

It is not an earnest recommendation for the economically disadvantaged.

People will believe anything that goes viral on Mastodon. Confirmation bias and media literacy around here is terrible.

WSJ

I saw a post go viral on here recently, a screenshot of a headline that read, "Why are women having fewer babies?", with the added text, "I don't know, why don't you ASK WOMEN??”

Googling and reading the article confirmed that they did, in fact, ask women.

Headlines aren't the whole story — I learned that in, I dunno, fourth grade?

@jsit People should keep in mind that headlines are not written by reporters but by editors. The editors might be going for clickbait, have a poor understanding of the story, and/or introducing their own biases.
@paulc That, too, but also a lot of trouble can be saved by just...reading.
For the record I simultaneously believe that this article is being deliberately misrepresented, *and* I believe that billionaires shouldn't exist.

@BadgerBadgerBadger

These people are obscenities! No one in this country, the ‘wealthiest’ country in the world, should have to go hungry ever! Also breakfast is the most important meal.

@BadgerBadgerBadger

For a while now a little guy has been appealing to me from the darker recesses of my mind that the simplest solution would be to blow up all the rich capitalists and confiscate their assets for the public.

I must admit that, as of late, I'm catching myself more frequently believing that solution to be the best one indeed, even if it goes against all ethical reason.

Unfortunately I simply do not see how to otherwise change this corrupt, broken system.

@BadgerBadgerBadger well they recommend the poor to eat less so i guess it’s fine :blob-lurk:
@BadgerBadgerBadger why tax the rich when my kids and I can just be a little more hungry.
@BadgerBadgerBadger
It's literally the most important meal of the day
@BadgerBadgerBadger to save money maybe people should cancel the Wall Street Journal subscription 🤪
@BadgerBadgerBadger Isn't this fucking ridiculous. No one who works should have to live with food insecurity.

@BadgerBadgerBadger Wythenshawe (where I live & work) has 97,635 population
54% (52,723) are sacrificing at least 1 meal a day
Of those, 81% (42,706) are suffering mental health because of this
Of those, 21,353 have seriously considered suicide.

Politicians have no idea how bad things are and they have proved they don't care.

@BadgerBadgerBadger (Wythenshawe is a large estate, southern edge of Manchester, UK)
@BadgerBadgerBadger
I save money (and trees) by not buying the WSJ. 👍

@BadgerBadgerBadger

Modern society is as unequal as 14th century EuropeBut, the solution here is to just tell poor people to skip meals in order to save money. There definitely aren't any other solutions we should be exploring or taking seriously.

@BadgerBadgerBadger
Here's a money saving tip:
EAT THE RICH!

@BadgerBadgerBadger @punko This is for every budget article I ever read telling me to cancel my magazine subscriptions. You out-of-touch ignoramuses think I have magazine subscriptions? You might as well tell me to put my spare Lear Jet into storage.

*this toot proudly brought to you by the year 1992

@BadgerBadgerBadger Yea, that's a pretty terrible line.

But skipping a meal can help you lose weight! Just make sure you support it with liquids.

@BadgerBadgerBadger holy crap. I don’t eat breakfast for reasons I’m not exactly clear on but all I know is everyone keeps telling me it’s the one meal I *should* eat!

@BadgerBadgerBadger Snapshot to the article https://archive.is/TuoxT

Last paragraph (because it got mangled in the copy):
"Breakfast lovers might be better off just having a cup of coffee—but go with roasted, not instant. Prices for roasted coffee declined by 0.1% last month, but instant coffee rose by a 3.6% monthly increase for instant coffee."

I mean I love coffee. But I also enjoy not starving

@BadgerBadgerBadger My god, rich people are so entitled and spoiled
@BadgerBadgerBadger as someone who is on SNAP, I can tell you that at times I do have to skip meals, or have a bowl of applesauce instead of a balanced meal.
@TransitBiker @BadgerBadgerBadger Congressmen (and men most of these assholes are...) should be required to confine their food budgets to what SNAP will pay for
@BadgerBadgerBadger one can start with cancelling WSJ subscription

@BadgerBadgerBadger

For decades: Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

Conservatives: Maybe you should skip it and be hungry throughout the day?

@BadgerBadgerBadger Even being wrongly accused of saying "let them eat cake" was enough to send Marie Antoinette to the guillotine.
@BadgerBadgerBadger intermittent fasting for your bank account.
